OLD COMICS IN 2023

What is the market for old comics in 2023? Is this a good time to sell my comic book collection? Comic book prices have come down since the exuberance of the pandemic years, but silver and gold have retained much of their value, and like stocks, even in a downturn your initial investment has continued to rise over the long haul. Bronze age in very high grade is also a good bet. Examples of valuable Golden Age comics, primarily from the 1940s & 1950s So if you need your cash for a college bound child, a wedding, or your own retirement, selling now might be still be a solid option. SWB141- THE JOKER’S CRIME CIRCUS From BATMAN COMICS #4 (1940) comes THE JOKER’S CRIME CIRCUS! While the story is credited to Bob Kane there is probably more than a little help here from Dick Sprang, Jerry Robinson and George Ruossos.  This “third year” of Batman defines the character for what he’ll be for much of the 40s— now with Robin along he has someone to talk to so that readers can follow along with his thoughts and reasoning.    He’s still got some of the mysterious aspects from his original appearance but he’s still an outlaw as far as the police are concerned.   T ..read more

SWB140- GREAT COMIC ARTISTS – KELLEY JONES Kelley Jones B. Jul 23, 1962 – he broke the style when it came to Batman– harkening back to the version Bernie Wrightson had done in the mid 1970s, Kelley angered a lot of fans who found his work to be too outrageous but he had his fans and stayed on the book for a number of years. I liked his style because it was so out there– and again going back to Batman’s shared roots with Dick Tracy, the character works best if he’s set in a nightmarish cartoon world. WHY: His Batman lived in a world that looked like Tim Burton had painted it. WHEN: Late 80s ea ..read more

In 1966 the Japanese Publisher of a popular boys Manga which came out weekly licensed Batman from DC Comics and put out their own version of the character– he was still Bruce Wayne, and his ward was Dick Grayson (although this version was a little more bratty than the American version– check out him calling that woman an old bag), the adaption was by Japanese Master Manga Artist Jiro Kuwata who was confused by Batman’s popularity.  Some of the stories were adapted loosely from the American Versions– Lord Death Man, debuting here, was based on US Villain Death Man! Mike Ploog July 13, 1942- Best known for Marvel Comics WEREWOLF BY NIGHT and his run on PLANET OF THE APES in the black and white magazine put out by Curtis Publications. Growing up I got my comics from a local Mom and Pop store that was across the street from my Elementary School (Oxford Street School in the Woo) and later West Side Pharmacy on Pleasant Street about a mile from my house.  Buying comics in those days was a crap shoot— you didn’t know if you’d get the next issue or not of a series you were following.  They didn’t carry everything either— I’m pretty sure my Mom and Po ..read more
