Brake Biased #9 - Why do people like Formula 1 in 2022?

Typically, when my schedule permits it, I tend to write the bulk of my op-eds and personal pieces in the aftermath of an F1 Grand Prix weekend. After all, three days of rubber being deposited and apexes being clipped tends to generate at least one point worth discussing and investigating. However, before a wheel had been turned in anger at the 2022 Singapore Grand Prix, there was something that I knew I just had to write about.  In the week leading up to the Marina Bay extravaganza, Ross Brawn was quizzed about whether or not F1’s adoption of carbon-neutral sustainable fuels could pave th ..read more

In the immediate aftermath of the 2022 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, it’s fair to say that one driver stole the show. Nyck De Vries was nothing less than spellbinding behind the wheel of his Williams this weekend, snagging a pair of sensational World Championship points on his debut and thrusting himself into the box seat for the 2023 drive alongside Alex Albon. Even with his illustrious track record across several other prominent motor racing categories, today must surely stand out as one of the absolute highlights of his career thus far.  It’s unquestionably a feel-good story, vindicatio ..read more

Fernando Alonso is a mercurial figure who has captivated motorsport fans both on and off the track across a length of time that now spans three decades. With his tenacity, fighting spirit, and relentless pursuit of success, Fernando has etched his name into the Formula One history books as one of the greatest to ever do it. In the process, he has accumulated millions of adoring fans all across the world.  A cursory look at his resume immediately indicates that this man can be described as nothing less than racing royalty. Having ushered in the end of the Schumacher era back in 2005 and 20 ..read more

A couple of days ago, I came across a Max Verstappen soundbite that had just gone viral. In what has become a highly publicised interview with Channel 4, Max revealed that his father Jos repeatedly told him that he would never become a World Champion and that e would never achieve his dreams. In his opinion, Max wasn’t cut from the right cloth and he didn’t shy away from telling him this.  Twitter being Twitter, most of the responses were adamant that Jos had abused his son and that his words amounted to a mild form of psychological torture. Whilst I certainly don’t condone conditional lo ..read more

After 3 years, Formula 1 made a much-welcomed return to Montreal and the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The Canadian Grand Prix has always been a highlight of the calendar, offering drama in abundance and a level of enthusiasm for the sport that’s only matched by Europe’s most historic venues. It was great to be back and this year’s Canadian Grand Prix certainly didn’t disappoint, offering a titanic tussle between Verstappen and Sainz that went right down to the very last lap. Try as he may, Carlos Sainz could not get past Max Verstappen Despite a valiant effort from Sainz that will hopefully ser ..read more

With seven races of the 2022 Formula One season now completed, we’re starting to get a good sense of this year’s major storylines. Although Checo’s incredible victory around the fabled streets of Monaco has changed the picture slightly, it still looks set to be a titanic tussle between Verstappen and Leclerc for this year’s championship. Away from the sharp end, Aston Martin continues to disappoint us all whilst Mick Schumacher and Daniel Ricciardo look like they could be in a dog fight to save their F1 careers.  In the midst of all that, it would be easy to overlook the team that has obl ..read more

The Formula One circus has completed the first leg of its European journey and the 2022 season really feels like it’s up and running now. A sweltering Sunday in Spain saw 121,000 sunburnt spectators line the sides of the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya for what was an uncharacteristically exciting Spanish Grand Prix. Having historically been a race that could double up as a cure for insomnia, this year’s race presented us with storylines, incidents, and some scintillating wheel to wheel action.  The untimely failure of Charles Leclerc’s MGU-H and turbo robbed the Ferrari driver of what loo ..read more

Brake Biased #4 - What we can learn from Valtteri Bottas’ resurgence?

The Spanish Grand Prix in glorious Barcelona is upon us and, despite the sport’s much-welcomed return to the fabled Imola circuit, it feels like the start of the European season. This is the weekend where teams typically introduce a drastic upgrade package and where the pecking order can get reshuffled. Heading into the weekend, there are clearly some drivers who are on the back foot and there are some who have a spring in their step. Valtteri Bottas is a driver who very much falls into the latter category on the back of an incredible start to the 2022 Formula One season. Having once looked do ..read more

The Lean Angle #2 - Is the Factory Seat a poisoned chalice?

With Le Mans done and dusted, we are starting to get a clearer picture of how the 2022 MotoGP season is taking shape. Up and down the grid, there are talking points aplenty. We could talk about Fabio Quartararo, whose metronomic consistency is once again saving Yamaha’s blushes. Alternatively, we could express our disbelief at Marc Marquez’s continued struggles aboard the Honda or how Aleix Espargaro is shaping up to be a genuine title contender this year. When you couple all of these topics with Suzuki’s impending withdrawal from the sport and an apparent overtaking crisis, you can safely say ..read more

Brake Biased #3 - Will F1 be a victim of its own success?

Welcome back to the third edition of my weekly opinion piece on Formula One. As I’m writing this, the dust has well and truly settled in the aftermath of the inaugural Miami GP. The much-vaunted “F1 Superbowl” has come and gone and it was a weekend that divided opinions for various reasons. Whilst many felt that the ridiculous amount of A-list celebrities increased the appeal of the Grand Prix, others felt that it made the actual racing feel like a showpiece. I personally didn’t know whether to laugh or cry during Martin Brundle’s grid walk. The track itself was like Marmite, with many of the ..read more
