Just before the end of their school year, La Follette High School graciously hosted us to share an interactive introduction into medical physics during their morning physics classes. Partnering with physics teacher, Alex Roethler, and Health Science Pathways Learning Coordinator, Kris Howard, UW Medical Physics Outreach developed a two-hour program aimed at covering some of the major themes of medical physics. This included an introductory presentation followed by three interactive stations. These stations covered the topics of radiation therapy treatment planning, radiation detection and safe ..read more

To conclude our involvement in the 2022 UW Science Expeditions, Medical Physics hosted a table in the Health Sciences Learning Center on Sunday. Visitors of all ages could be seen exploring the many tables at the event. People seemed relieved to hear that the brain on our table was merely made out of gelatin unlike the real brains on display at other group tables. In addition to ultrasound and x-ray imaging, members of the public could learn history and safety regarding radiation by talking to us about our Geiger counter and antique Fiestaware! Thank you to Nicholas Summerfield, Lisette LeMeri ..read more

After being cancelled in 2021 and delayed earlier this year due to COVID, the Physics Fair was back in action last Saturday! Being hosted in conjunction with the UW Science Expeditions and featuring the beloved Wonders of Physics Annual Show, the Fair was very well-attended! The Medical Physics table was placed in prime position across from the popular Physics Museum and on the way to the Wonders of Physics Show. Nearly everyone who walked by came over to our table to learn what we were all about! At our table, visitors could explore ultrasound imaging by investigating our gelatin phantoms an ..read more

As the school year concludes, Medical Physics tackled Anana Elementary science and reading night. Due to weather, the event was moved to the gymnasium; however, we were still happy to see a great turnout of families eager to learn about science. Eric Wallat led an ultrasound demo where students could find embedded raisins in a heart phantom using an ultrasound transducer. Aeli Olson taught students about radiation and radiation detection using a Geiger counter and antique Fiestaware. Finally, Joe Whitehead talked about how we can use radiation to image the body via x-rays and radiographic film ..read more
