From Residential Schools to Sir John A MacDonald - The Conservatives try to erase Canada’s genocidal history

Calls have been mounting for Tory leader Pierre Poilievre (PP) to drop their North Island-Powell River candidate Aaron Gunn from the ballot.   In social media posts between 2019 and 2021, Gunn repeatedly denied Canada's record of Indigenous genocide and the legacy of Indian Residential "Schools" (IRS). In one such post in October 2020 he wrote: "There was no [Indigenous] genocide. Stop lying to people and read a book. The Holocaust was a genocide." He has further claimed that "residential schools were asked for by Indigenous bands."   Bob (Galagame) Chamberlin, the former vice-pres ..read more

Federal election: Trump threats and the bosses’ push to the right
Socialist.ca

The Canadian federal election debate is being dominated by Donald Trump’s tariffs and his calls for annexation of Canada.   Canadians are, justifiably, terrified of the impacts of the trade war. Estimates of hundreds of thousands of job losses and recession in the wake of the tariffs have put most other considerations far into the background.   As was the case in the Ontario election, the race becomes about who can hold their own against the Trump attacks.   New Liberal leader, Mark Carney has jumped into the lead ahead of Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives. This is a dramatic t ..read more

How to be a socialist in your union 6:00 PM PDT,  Monday March 31 Via Zoom Unions are a way workers can fight to improve their immediate working and living standards and are also a key part of winning victories for the entire working class. Unions in Canada were essential in the vicotory for equal marriage, the fight for abortion rights and the first national maternity leave program. Unions can also be much more democratic than other institutions in our society because they are run by workers themselves to defend workers themselves. However, often we find union leaderships refusing to f ..read more

Mark Carney – Neoliberal Climate Gas-lighter

For those who care about people and the planet, it is right to be concerned about the prospect of a Pierre Poilievre government. But new PM Mark Carney does not represent a real alternative.   He won the Liberal leadership race by a landslide, riding a resurgent wave of Liberal fortunes in response to Trump’s tariffs and 51st state rhetoric. He is touted as a political outsider, never having run for or won a seat in an election.   But on economic and climate policy, he is very much an insider.   He advised Goldman Sachs – helping them profit during the 1998 Russian economic cr ..read more

These workers are the most precarious segment of the university's workforce. They face low wages, high tuition, food insecurity, unsustainable workloads and unaffordable housing. Key demands in this strike are a living wage ..read more

Canada's Genocide: Vindication for MMIWG2S+ movement

In 2019, the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women's Inquiry final report concluded that the thousands of deaths and disappearances of Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people (MMIWG2S+) are part of a “Canadian genocide” fueled by “state actions and inactions rooted in colonialism and colonial ideologies.” But out of 231 recommendations, only 2 had been completed by last June and most have seen minimal or no progress.   Under Canadian settler colonialism, Indigenous people must struggle relentlessly for the basic decency of burying their relatives.    In late February the ..read more
