On August 12th, 2023, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue unit was dispatched to Paulina Lake Falls Trail for a report of an injured hiker. Initial reports detailed a 53 year old female who had possibly broken her ankle while hiking and could not walk to the main roadway.
Twelve Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue volunteers and one Special Services deputy responded to the location and treated the hiker by placing her leg into a splint. On August 6, 2023, at approximately 1:20 pm, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue unit was dispatched to a report of a fallen climber at Smith Rock State Park.
Initial Reports detailed a climber fell approximately 20 feet while rappelling off the Brogan Spire on BLM land north of Smith Rock State Park. The subject was rendered unconscious for several minutes due to her fall. The injured climber’s partner yelled for assistance and several local climbers responded and contacted Deschutes County 911 Dispatch.

On 07/15/23 at 10:00 am, Deschutes County Search and Rescue were dispatched to the area of Swampy Lakes Loop trail near Swede Ridge Trail intersection. Initial reports advised a mountain biker who was racing in the High Cascades 100 had crashed and severely injured his knee. The rider was not able to ride out of the area, nor was he able to walk and was requesting assistance from Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue.

On May 27, 2023 at 3:15 pm, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a boat crash on the Deschutes River near La Pine State Recreation Park. Initial reports advised a jet boat was travelling up river when it struck a submerged tree that was not visible. Deschutes County 911 Dispatch received a 911 call regarding a motorcycle crash in the East Fort Rock OHV trail system area near China Hat Rd. milepost 17.5. The 911 caller reported that a 63-year-old female had been riding on OHV “Trail 18” when she crashed on her motorcycle and sustained non-life-threatening injuries that limited her mobility.
