The results of our first SBC Reader Survey are in! We asked Silent Book Club members to share the last great book they read and more than 1200 readers replied. AMAZING! In total, there were 818 books recommended across all genres and eras from classics to new releases. Readers shared fiction, non-fiction, works in translation, poetry, YA, graphic novels, thrillers, horror, self-help, memoirs, and much more.  Many of the most popular books were installments in series (Fourth Wing and Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros led the pack), and many readers voted for series as a whole (like AC ..read more

Earlier this month, the host of NPR's Nerdette podcast, Greta Johnsen, dropped in on Silent Book Club at Dorothy, a lesbian bar in Chicago (previously featured in this great article). She and her producer interviewed SBC organizer Charlie Schumann and bar owner Whitney LaMora, and chatted with attendees and bartenders to hear what people thought of Silent Book Club. It's a fantastic listen, highly recommend. The story aired on WBEZ Chicago and you can find the recording online (the SBC feature starts at 15:15), but we've transcribed it here if you don't have ..read more

It was a shared love of books that inspired Mariely Vélez Pérez and Andrea Carolina Delgado Villarrubia to start a Silent Book Club in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. The pair met as students at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez and became close friends. Both were passionate about reading and writing. Mariely created the We Read blog in 2012, and Andrea Carolina began co-blogging with her about books in 2020. While they enjoyed building an online community, they also wanted to hang out with other book lovers. Since launching SBC West Side, Puerto Rico in Aug ..read more

Many of the times that musicians step into the literary world, they are mining their memories on the road, through a tumultuous time or legendary part of their careers. There are a handful who release poetry, novels or advice on creativity and art, some as award-winning in their writing as in their music.  If you are lucky enough to see David Byrne on tour or in NYC, you might catch him on a bike (we saw him riding in Knoxville). If not, just take a spin through his book, Bicycle Diaries. John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats is known for his lyrics. He has a number of novels out, includin ..read more

In 2012, we had no idea that this lark of an idea would spark a global movement. The concept was simple: gather with fellow book lovers, enjoy the company of others without the pressure of conversation, and lose yourself in the pages of a good book. Today Silent Book Club has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, with more than 500 chapters in 50 countries across 6 continents. Silent Book Club meetups are as diverse as the communities they serve. Some meet in cozy cafes or hotel bars, while others gather in libraries, parks, or in the ruins of a medieval Italian monastery.   Some ..read more

We're shining a light on the people who make Silent Book Club great—our local organizers. Get to know the folks behind the scenes, and maybe get inspired to start your own chapter! We first met Corrin Foster in 2020 when she worked at a publishing house in Austin, Texas. She reached out to us to promote an author's book, and we worked together on several campaigns for different authors over the course of a couple years.  When Corrin moved from Austin to Charleston, South Carolina, for a new job in publishing, she was looking for a way to meet new friends. We're shining a light on the people who make Silent Book Club great—our local organizers. Get to know the folks behind the scenes, and maybe get inspired to start your own chapter! Krystle Johnson started hosting Silent Book Club San Diego in 2019, when she read about it in Oprah Magazine and took over the chapter from a previous organizer. We caught up with her to ask a few questions about her experience as an SBC host. What has been your favorite part about hosting SBC San Diego? Meeting new people who have become as close to me as family now. I’m surprised by how many of ..read more

We're shining a light on the people who make Silent Book Club great—our local organizers. Get to know the folks behind the scenes, and maybe get inspired to start your own chapter! Today's spotlight is written by Kathleen Adams, host of Silent Book Club Athens, Georgia.   Several close friends had recently moved away in late 2019 and I was looking for ways to meet new people. When I heard about Silent Book Club, I thought it sounded like a perfect way for introverted readers like me to not only get out of the house, but make new friends. One of my personal favorit ..read more

We're shining a light on the people who make Silent Book Club great—our local organizers. Get to know the folks behind the scenes, and maybe get inspired to start your own chapter! We like to think of Divya Mirchandani as one of our "OG" SBC organizers. She's been with Silent Book Club since 2016, originally launching a chapter in Orange County, California. When the pandemic hit, the group shifted to online meetings (the LA Times even reported about it!). As the pandemic wore on, many of the original group members moved to different states. To keep the group intact, th ..read more
