Every year, a new class of kids enroll in high school, and every year, parents have to make the difficult decision of where to send their children to school. This is one of the most important decisions to make, as the years that make up high school can be the most defining years of a student’s life. There are several things to take into consideration during this process, like proximity to their home, ratio of students to teachers, and classes offered. The pressing question is: Are the test scores of schools an important factor that people consider when choosing a school?  Students, partic ..read more

Opinion: Teachers should not give pop quizzes
Calabasas Courier Online

The idea of a pop quiz, or any test for that matter, is to test student’s knowledge. With pop quizzes specifically, students do not have time to prepare—the test appears with a pop. Pop quizzes are often used to see what students know off the top of their heads without studying; essentially, to see if they have been paying attention or completed assignments. On rare occasions, these quizzes are given with a clear, fair intent. But, for the most part, pop quizzes are the unfair weapon of grumpy teachers who want to punish their students. There is only one part of school that can be a surprise t ..read more

Opinion: Down with peer editing
Calabasas Courier Online

Peer editing is exactly what it sounds like: students edit their peers’ work and give them feedback, typically for an essay-type assignment. This seems like a great idea—students get feedback, they help each other and best of all, it takes away some of the workload on teachers. On occasion, peer editing can be just as wonderful and effective as it seems, but there is a limit. Peer editing is not as beneficial as teachers who regularly use it seem to think. In my experience, students filling out a cookie-cutter rubric, the same rubric their teacher will eventually use to grade their essay, is a ..read more

On Nov. 8, 2022, Measure S, a $340 million bond measure, passed, leaving CHS to begin undergoing a variety of facility updates. While CHS has seen a few upgrades, some students may be wondering when the benefits of the bond measure will truly start rolling in, especially one of the most anticipated facility projects: the H-Building heating and air conditioning unit. “Starting this summer, each classroom in the H-building is going to get an individual heating and air conditioning unit,” said CHS principal Bennett Wutkee. “Right now, they’ve all been running on a central unit. Now they’re all go ..read more

Disclosure: The title is based on “The Death and Life of Great American Cities” By Jane Jacobs 1961 Architecture is composed of a balance between utility and beauty; a building must serve its community and fulfill its purpose while adding to the urban environment and creating art that integrates into the landscape. “That which is complete, flawless, and has attained its purpose,” as Aristotle defined perfection. Granted, perfection is a high bar and any perfect architecture deteriorates nonetheless, but the age of modern architecture has forgotten perfection, it has forgotten good architecture ..read more

Over the past few months, the class of 2024 has been preparing for every high school senior’s biggest concern: college acceptance. Early decisions have already started to get returned, creating mixed emotions for everyone. Naturally, applicants wonder what makes the perfect college candidate. Is a student with a 3.6 GPA more likely to get into a top school than someone with a 4.3 GPA if they have better essays or test scores? Does the high school a student attends matter? All of these questions lead to a singular dilemma; do these factors give certain applicants leverage over others?  Cer ..read more

While the CHS students were away on spring break, architectural changes were made (and are still being made) to various locations around campus. Some level of maintenance was expected, as Tyler Lee, the assistant principal of safety, faculties, and athletics, sent out multiple reminders about the locker removal that was supposed to occur; however, locker removal was delayed, and new projects were begun. All of the west-facing classrooms of the H-building backdoors are now strictly emergency exits, and the connecting alleyway is completely blocked off due to construction in preparation for the ..read more

While summer is around the corner, Calabasas High School seniors have begun to figure out their summer plans. Most seniors go on the Buzz tour around Europe, which has been all the talk. However, there has also been talk about whether taking an independent trip is also a good alternative. The “Buzz Trip,” run by David Bussing, the leader and main tour guide, has operated since 1989. Since then, the trip has aimed to please new high-school graduate students from all over Los Angeles. With Buzz’s trip comes the benefits of traveling to Europe with a large group of students and friends. People ar ..read more
