Let’s make this a May Day to be remembered!

Every year on May 1, we celebrate International Workers’ Day to commemorate workers securing an eight-hour workday, a victory that needs to be defended today. May Day has deep meaning going back to 1886 after the resistance of Black, white and immigrant workers in Haymarket Square in Chicago. The Haymarket Martyrs were eight immigrants, seven sentenced to death and one to life in prison. They were struggling for the eight-hour workday alongside hundreds of thousands of workers striking and attending rallies throughout the United States demanding “Eight hours for work. Eight hours for rest. Ei ..read more

The Party must campaign for DC statehood
Communist Party USA Blog

The people of the District of Columbia are second-class citizens, some even considering themselves colonial subjects under colonial-like conditions with the lack of Statehood or testing grounds for policy that may be enacted around the country. The people of DC have long self-determined that the promise of democracy and enfranchisement in the republic must expand to those who live in the Federal District. Popularly known as “Chocolate City” for many decades due to its majority Black population and self-empowerment with the gains made under Home Rule post-1974 and the mayorship under “M ..read more

The liberation of Gaza and our industrial concentration policy
Communist Party USA Blog

Following Lenin and William Z. Foster, Gus Hall, the long-time CPUSA chair, correctly insisted on a party-wide policy of industrial concentration: the critical importance of building the party in industry and developing industrial workers as members-leaders. Marxism understands industrial workers will play an outsized role in humanity’s transition from capitalism to socialism. How can an initiative to liberate Gaza advance our industrial concentration policy? Consider: On February 12, the United Auto Workers Arab caucus called on president Shawn Fain and the UAW as a whole to “take act ..read more

A Michigan perspective on the struggle against racism
Communist Party USA Blog
by Eric Brooks

Capitalism’s existence depends on racism. Two important reasons: 1) capitalists use racism to divide workers, and 2) capital accumulation depends on the vilification of large sections of the working class to create conditions of super-exploitation. White supremacy denies the humanity of people of color, and it is a core value of this country’s ruling class and its non-capitalist class collaborators. The national question, the Communist Party’s way of understanding and explaining the complexities of race and racism, is dynamic. Demographic fluidity, migration across and within internati ..read more

What the Party needs to build: a national campaign, mass organizations, and an economic plan
Communist Party USA Blog

Authors’ Note: This is not a critique of party policy, organization, leadership, or history. It is meant to learn from our past to inform our future. The party has been in a serious rebuilding phase, building a new party in this new socialist moment amidst an imperialist crisis and fascist danger in the country. These crises and the reality of which we live in, where the social movements are, and the level of class and socialist consciousness, shape how we approach our work while using the science of the working class, Marxism-Leninism. The Communist Party of the United States, through ..read more

For concrete benchmarks for defeat of the far right
Communist Party USA Blog

History and objective correctness of unity against the far right The ultra-left continuously tells us the Democrats deserve to lose, and that the defeat of the center opens space for the left. What historic possibilities did Hitler, Pinochet, Franco or Suharto open? In less extreme cases, precisely what opportunities for the far left were realized by the victories of Thatcher and Reagan? Again and again, the answer is that the victory of the far right does nothing good whatsoever for the prospects of socialism, but rather drowns those prospects in rivers of blood. Reform and revolution ..read more

Five years ago The Communist Party USA held its 31st National Convention in Chicago. We celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Party’s founding at that convention in 2019. Now we prepare for our 32nd convention in 2024. We have a lot to carefully consider as we update our program and select our next National Committee. This is the Kansas City Club’s contribution to that discussion. New members and social media  As the membership of the Party has exploded over the last few years, many new members have reported long waits to hear back from their Districts or Clubs. The Missouri / K ..read more

The uncommitted movement and voting against fascism
Communist Party USA Blog

It has been said time and again that communists must run in elections, build the progressive and labor movement and defeat fascism. What are the implications this has on the present election where the current Democratic U.S. President and Democratic Party nominee has abandoned the progressive platform that he ran on, allowed Republicans to pass their backwards legislation in several states, allowed abortion to be banned, and is currently abetting a genocide and stoking a regional war? The progressive answer was to protest as loudly as possible and let the Democratic Party know that the ..read more

Campus ceasefire protests deserve support: Keep the pressure on!
Communist Party USA Blog

The Communist Party USA salutes the university student protests and occupations as they struggle for a ceasefire in Gaza for divestment from the Israeli occupation of Palestine. Keep the pressure on!  We denounce in the strongest possible terms the repression and arrests of the protesters, at Columbia, Yale, NYU the University of Michigan and other universities where hundreds have been jailed and suspended at the behest of university administrators. We support the constitutional and democratic right for students, youth, and workers to organize and protest against the Israeli-led g ..read more
