========== Update 26 April 2024 ==========
The energy world has rotated much since 2013, I now see a clear way forward for energy. Geothermal electrical power generation can fuel our future world for millennia. Carbon-free, anywhere, at any scale. Listen...

A 1680 eclipse prediction?
It has been much in the news lately that Edmond Halley (1656-1742) was the first in modern times to predict an eclipse with modern methods, specifically the 22 April 1715 eclipse across southern England. Discussing this with University of Arkansas physicist Daniel Kennefick over the last couple of weeks, it seemed strange that Isaac Newton (1642-1727) did not predict, nor much mention, eclipses in his great book, the 1687 Principia Mathematica. As some of you know, I collect early science books and this set me searching through some works likely to address the eclip ..read more

Update 18 Apr: A Society of Exploration Geophysicists Leading Edge article for Sven is in the works by Kurt Marfurt and others.
------
Update 15 Apr: There was a small private ceremony for Sven in Tulsa on Friday 12 April. I was invited to say a few words on behalf of Sven's geophysical friends (impossible task!) and told them about your global outpouring of affection and respect for Sven. Anyone wishing to make a commemorative donation in Sven's behalf can consider these options:

Back home after the Standord Geothermal Workshop (SGW). Some highlights were catching up with Russell Roundtree (CSM geophysics grad) and signing on to help with the AGU-SEG geothermal workshop in summer 2025. Stay tuned for details.
Pulled out 45 SGW papers of particular interest to me and thought why not code up some python to scrape the text out of the pdf files then make a wordcloud? Might give a kind of ranked summary of the important topics in the papers I selected. About 350K words contributed to the word cloud below. Interesting relative occurrence of model versus data. Right now mode ..read more

This week I am attending the #stanford #geothermal workshop. SGW is a premier forum on all aspects of geothermal, from district heating to electric power generation.
After serving six years as #uark #geosciences department chair and two more as #fulbright college associate dean, I've chosen to rejoin regular faculty this summer. My plan is to focus on modern, utility-scale geothermal power generation for #arkansas, where 90% of electrical power is from fossil fuels and a mature nuclear power plant. In the coming decades, some other form ..read more
