Aquariums & Colonialism By Emil Davityan The Seattle Aquarium is set to unveil its Ocean Pavilion expansion this summer. Given the exorbitant price tag—now over $160 million—peak-season visitors will presumably be eagerly welcomed. The costly expansion draws attention to potential incongruities with Seattle Aquarium’s self-proclaimed focus on conservation and respect for Indigenous communities. This is not unique to the Seattle Aquarium. City aquariums commonly mask entertainment as conservation work and education. In reality they contribute to an array of problems for marine ecosystems an ..read more

From CAFOs to Catastrophe: The Shocking Toll on Aquatic Life
Northwest Animal Rights Network
by NARN Board
7M ago
In the heartland of industrial agriculture, vast Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) churn out copious amounts of animal “products”. Cows, Pigs, Chickens, and Turkeys in CAFOs are housed typically in large buildings or feedlots. They are not allowed to roam freely or have anything resembling a normal life. Instead, they are crammed in a space with thousands or tens of thousands of animals to make feeding and waste collection “efficient” and reduce the land area needed. Having limited or no access to pasture or outdoor areas, the “livestock” are fed a controlled diet, often consistin ..read more

U.S. Potential ESA Listing for Macaques
Northwest Animal Rights Network
by NARN Board

By Bella Niven Introduction Macaques are intelligent and social nonhuman primates who are considered sacred in some of their native regions of Southeast Asia; they are also the most “popular” primate used for testing in research laboratories. Their popularity amongst researchers, specifically for disease and neuroscience experiments, comes from the similar physiology Macaques share with humans. With the unfortunate growing interest in obtaining Macaques for research, captive-breeding and trafficking of wild Macaques has in turn increased. Just this year, a laboratory in the U.S. by the name o ..read more

Do Aquariums Really Help With Conservation?
Northwest Animal Rights Network
by NARN Board

An aquarium visit can appear fun and informative. As you wander through the halls, marveling at  the exquisite creatures in each tank, it’s easy to forget that you are merely a spectator. Meanwhile, the marine animals you’re observing are trapped in their tiny spaces, doomed to swim in repetitive  circles for their entire existence. While you can choose to leave the aquarium when you grow tired  or bored, they have no such luxury.   In the wild, these animals roam far and wide. A Dolphin, for example, swims several miles every  day. However, the Animal Welfare Act ..read more

NARN Statement on Use of Child Labor in the U.S.
Northwest Animal Rights Network
by NARN Board
1y ago
According to a recent exposé by the New York Times, the number of underage workers in factories and construction sites has increased substantially since the COVID-19 pandemic. Companies are easily exploiting displaced children vulnerable to indentured servitude and enslavement because more children are entering the U.S. without a parent or legal guardian and there is little government oversight of children released from U.S. custody. Companies are flagrantly disregarding child labor laws and seemingly setting labor rights for major sectors of the U.S. workforce back nearly a hundred years.&nbs ..read more
