Last year still seems unreal, so much happened within our organization but if we had to choose one word to summarize our 2022 it would be GROWTH! As a Latina owned nonprofit, to see how much we have accomplished fills our heart, but to see how much our organization is needed still breaks my heart a little. I am for a world where Latinas in Tech nonprofit is no longer needed because that means that Latinas and women of color have equal opportunity and pay, seats at the table and are given the opportunity to innovate and lead. There is still so much to do to see this kind of change but we’re not ..read more

Dealing with a layoff is not easy, 4 things I wished I knew then.

The last few months have been notable for massive U.S tech layoffs. Last year, more than 90,000 jobs were slashed from public and private tech companies, and in early 2023 already more than 16,000 workers at U.S.-based tech companies have been laid off, according to Crunchbase News. My LinkedIn feed has seen a lot of mention about the current layoffs – mostly from people engaging with the posts of those affected. This has triggered my memories, feelings, and trauma of the day that I got laid-off in 2015 for the first time in my career and from a company that I loved and considered to be “my dr ..read more

Latina Equal Pay Day is Latina Equal Pay day of action. It is a moving date. This is not really a day for celebration, it is a day of awareness and to take action. Typically the date changes annually because it is determined by how much money a full-time, Latina worker was paid, on average, in the prior calendar year. In other words, the day would be observed on the date a Latina catches up to the wages made by a white, non-Hispanic man the year before.” Last year, in 2021, Latina Equal Pay Day was October 21. This 2022 it was December 8th. That is a regression, this means it took us, Latinas ..read more

1. Tell us about yourself. How did you get to where you are today?   ? Manuela:  I’ve always been fascinated with combining engineering with art because my dad is an engineer and my mom is an artist. My dad had encouraged me to start coding at a young age, and once I got to college, I naturally went into studying computer science. It wasn’t until my junior year that I took my first design course and thought, “Wow! This is an entire aspect of building that I had been missing” -- and I absolutely loved it. Within engineering, I started gearing more towards iOS. I really liked building ..read more
