Seattle Caps Late Fees at $10 per month

Op Ed: The opinions expressed here are solely the opinions of Peter Nelson, CEO of Full Service Property Management.  They do NOT represent those of the company or any of its staff. In April the City Council for Seattle passed an ordinance capping late fees at a maximum of $10…for the whole month.  Not $10/day, but simply a flat $10.  This move mirrors similar laws passed in Burien, Seatac, and Auburn. In the last half of 2022, winter was setting in, the holidays were upon us, the Fed was raising rates, and the pundits (whoever they are were telling us landlords to buckle down.  That was short-lived! It appears the worst is past us with regards to COVID-19. People do not seem to be dying in the droves they were in previous years. But the danger is still very real. People continue to catch COVID, and are quarantined at home because of it. At Full Service Property Management, all of our staff work from their home. The impact this virus has had on us has been minimal. But it still looms out there. We remain relatively optimistic that we can remain healthy outdoors. Housing prices seem to be at the forefront of most owners’ and tenants’ minds these days. And why not? The market is as active has it has ever been — for both brokerage and rental. Zillow gives housing owners an estimate of what they think the market will do over the next year. They update their estimate monthly.
