The Blame Game… and why it’s trash

We’ve all done it. Made up a story in our head about why our baby(ies) died. Let me be clear; I’m NOT referring to those situations where a physician told you something specific contributed to your loss (e.g., chromosomal issue, something causing issues with implantation, etc.). I’m talking about those losses that have no clear medical reason. The one’s that leave you confused, feeling stuck in your planning processes, and frankly… PISSED OFF! Our brains are wired to try and make sense of the world. They operate (to a degree) as storytellers that organize information into concepts that make s ..read more

What do I say to the one’s that lived..?

Photo by: ChildrenNatureNetwork Recently I’ve been in several discussions with loss parents about navigating healing in the entire family. The process of healing after loss is layered, nuanced, and varied. You’re dealing with 1) your own healing, 2) any potential partner’s healing, 3) reintegration into family & friend-life, 4) and figuring out how to talk to any living children or subsequent children about your llo (lost little one). I’ll save 1-3 for another post, and focus this entry on talking to the sibs. So… what do you say? Your older kid(s) asks why their younger sibling isn’t comi ..read more

Hello out there!! I know, I know. It has been WAAAAAAYYYYYYY too long since I last published a post. Life has been “lifing” HARD and some days the hits come too hard for me to gather myself enough to write longer content. If you follow me on IG, you know I’m semi-active there (listen… me and trying to manage social media are just one step above a struggle-bus relationship!) so 1) thanks for following, and 2) if you don’t follow me there, hop on over to do so. @Black_Angel_Mom is my handle. Despite slacking off on some content here, I have been in the kitchen cooking up something special! My ta ..read more

It’s October again. Pregnancy and Infant Loss (PAIL) Awareness Month is well underway, and PAIL Awareness Week is happening as we speak! Where did this year go?! Every year, I like to do something specific in addition to the wave of light (happening 10/15/20), any remembrance walks, and my usual candle lighting. The first year, I just gave tips, the second year, I helped to showcase BAM’s who created wonderful artwork, books, and poetry through the #BAMsCreate movement. This year, I’m stretched a little thin because of the pandemic and in transparency, got a late start on securing content for ..read more

Mother’s Day Moxie

photo by: Dazzle-Jam. SO much power in this photo! Moxie! Last weekend was International Bereaved Mother’s Day.  A time to honor the identity of “mother” that so many loss moms/angel moms want to claim, but from which they feel barred.  Such is the nature of what is commonly known as disenfranchised loss. Losses like these are characterized by lack of social recognition or validation: a lack of entitlement to feelings of grief. Perinatal loss (miscarriage, stillbirth, and neonatal death) falls into this category despite the known impact on those who suffer this type of trauma.  ..read more

Welp! We’re in a pandemic. Can you believe it?! It all seems so surreal sometimes… things seem normal-ish, but then weird asf the moment you step outside your home.  I know a lot of people had high hopes for 2020. Maybe you were hoping for a reset of some sort; a new way of ushering in this year of your life that involved taking more chances, doing the things you’d been holding back from, of getting closure from some situation you’ve been doing the hokey pokey with for years. I can almost guarantee, your idea of entering in a new decade didn’t involve wearing masks, outside being closed ..read more

Did you know April 11th – 18th is Black Maternal Health Week? Welp, now you know! It’s a week focused on the Black experience in conception, pregnancy, birthing, and post-partum addressing barriers to effective care, comprehensive treatment, and supportive services. Issues of reproductive justice, holistic health, and political reform are at the forefront during this week so keep an eye out for a HUGE series of events (all virtual because… COVID). In all that is covered this week, I have to say that I often find that loss mom’s (and loss parents because everyone with a uterus doesn’t identify ..read more

In January of 2017, I was beginning my IVF journey. I hoped it would work. It was my first try, I was scared of all the needles to come, and slowly trying to forget about all the money we just dropped on the hope of creating family. January 2020… three years later, I am a much changed person. I have unfortunately known a love like no other, followed by a loss like no other. I have seem my children live and die in the span of a few hours. I have a become a mother, then an angel mom/loss mom, then a mother/parent of a living child, and now, an author. I know I’ve been MIA from the blog recently ..read more

photo by @attosfotograficos Recently I attended and tabled at an event targeting mental health awareness. I provided info about my practice, as well as information about pregnancy & infant loss awareness (#PAILAwareness) month, and shared some information about Black Angel Mom. In talks with another person tabling, I was on the receiving end of this comment when asked what prompted me to start BlackAngelMom.com: “You know that happened for a reason, right?  I mean, there’s often something wrong with the body that causes that to happen and if you get the right nutrients, it won’t happe ..read more
