Although a metal detector and magnetic locator may seem to do the same thing, which is to locate buried metal objects, they are indeed very different devices. Magnetic locators do not operate in the same way as your traditional metal detectors. Your traditional metal detector will transmit an electromagnetic field from the coil and will pick up any metallic item that is within range of that electromagnetic field. A magnetic locator however, does not transmit anything, instead it measures magnetic field distortion from a buried metal object. In order for a magnetic locator to pickup on that mag ..read more

This article relates to VLF (Very Low Frequency) metal detectors, which account for most hobby detectors as well as some gold detectors on the market today. If you look at the specifications of the metal detector, you will find a frequency that the machine runs at. Some examples: Garrett ACE 200i – 6.5 kHz Nokta Simplex+ – 12 kHz Minelab Equinox 800 – Multi, 5, 10, 15, 20, 40 kHz Nokta Gold Kruzer – 61 kHz So what do these numbers actually mean and should you worry about them? Well this depends, if you a just want a machine to have some fun with in the park to see what you can find, then no, i ..read more

I came across this fantastic guide from Smarterhobby.com – so all credit goes to Mark Orwig for writing this article. (Some products and prices changed to fit in line with the South African market)   Ever since James Marshall’s 1848 discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill, prospecting in the United States has been the ultimate treasure hunt. Prospecting gold nuggets with a metal detector is a thrilling hobby that’s both fun and (financially) rewarding. But with so many machines on the market, how do you know which is the best metal detector for gold? This go-to guide is packed with useful in ..read more

Treasure Hunters Blog

Not only do I enjoy metal detecting but also love dabbling around with the camera (both photography and videography) and have had this burning desire to create a short film on metal detecting for some time now. Of course what I had in mind and what the final outcome of the film turned out to be was complete opposites! I was thinking more actors, dialogue – something more along the lines of the series “Detectorists” but on a much smaller scale with much less of a budget (aka zero budget). But in the end, I settled on me, myself and I as the actor, camera operator, drone flyer, voice over artist ..read more

The hole that keeps on giving

If there was only one thing I could advise you on, just one thing, it would be to check your holes again after digging a target. Get into the habit of always ensuring there really is nothing left in the hole before covering it back up. I went for a little beach hunt the other night and really was not finding anything (beach was sanded in) but then came across this one hole on the dry sand… the hole that kept on giving. Started off with just a single tone, dug and found a 1 dollar coin. Bingo, before covering up, lets just check that there is nothing left in the hole, bang, anoth ..read more

G’day mate and greetings from Australia! I know I have not posted a blog entry for a long time, so for that I do apologise – it was not a case that I had stopped metal detecting but rather a case of not finding much… at all! I am presently working in Perth, Australia ( I know I have moved around a lot, I do feel like a gypsy some days) so I will be blogging from here for a while (until the next move that is)! So where to begin? Well let me start by telling you that metal detecting is pretty big here, I follow some Australian metal detecting sites online and there are many more active dete ..read more
