Duskmourn: House of Horror releases on September 27th. And that also means we got some spooky Commander precons. I’ve already written about how great Manifest Dread is going to be in Duskmourn Limited, and in this article I’m writing about the Jump Scare! precon, which is all about manifesting dread and startling your opponents by turning your face-down permanents into scary monsters! I’ll be reviewing the deck’s contents and suggesting some upgrades.

As has become the norm for precons, we’ve got two potential Commanders. The face Comm ..read more

13. UNLUCKY FOR SOME Neglected Manor | Strangled Cemetery | Murky Sewer
It’s great when we get numberplay in spooky Magic sets, and Duskmourn doesn’t fail to disappoint. We’ve got the “unlucky” land cycle debuting here. They enter tapped unless a player has 13 or less life, which is going to happen pretty quickly, actually.
The artwork on each evokes classic horror tropes and locations, which results in on-point flavor for this new set.

The unveiling of new set mechanics is always my favorite part of spoiler season, since their quality has a huge impact on how we perceive that expansion. The new rules need enough flavor and novelty value to turn heads, but also to be balanced, and offer interesting play patterns that can hold up over the next 2-3 years of Standard.
Luckily for the Duskmourn: House of Horror design team, “new” doesn’t always have to mean “reinventing the wheel”. The new “Rooms” spells are just another tweak on the familiar concept of split cards - the biggest difference being that both halves are enchantments ..read more

We’re in the midst of Duskmourn: House of Horrors preview season and it releases later this month, on September 27th . The set contains lots of really cool mechanics, but the one that has caught my eye the most is “Manifest Dread.” In this article, I’ll break down how the mechanic works and how I think it’ll perform in the Limited formats.
At first glance, Manifest Dread might just seem like a slightly different take on the original Manifest mechanic, which first appeared in Fate Reforged. But it's substantially stronger because it does so much more.

MDFC Lands are one of the best ways in Commander to make your deck slots go further. You can play them in place of lands as long as you’re disciplined, and they can give you less chances to flood. Kristen is here with 10 of the Best MDFC Lands for Commander.
Modal-Double-Faced-Card (or MDFC) Lands are great. I personally play them in place of actual lands, but then, I’m also a big believer in playing them as lands. If you want to “skimp” on land counts in your deck, then I have two things to say to you:
Firstly, don’t. Just don’t do it. You need to play enough lands and enough card draw ..read more

Discard effects are essential to the balance of competitive Magic, and to the color identity of black as a whole. Whether it’s Duress, Thoughtseize, Grief, or Inquisition of Kozilek, almost any black decklist will find room for these powerful tools somewhere in their 75.
Duress | Thoughtseize
But as popular as these targeted discard spells have been through the years, they are usually just one tool in a balanced list. It’s a much more rare kind of black deck which wholly embraces discard spells – including non-targeted ones – and the attritional approach to gameplay they encourage. The last f ..read more

Angels are cool. There’s something about their combat prowess and sheer Paladin-energy that brings the heat to any table. They’re also one of the most popular decks to build for Commander, whether in mono-white, Boros, Selesnya, or even three-plus color variants. Here we share 10 of the more underplayed Angels that you should take a second look at… and why.
10 UNDERRATED ANGELS WE THINK ARE COOL
While Angels have many powerful entries, from Commanders like Aurelia and Giada, to Karmic Guide and Serra Paragon’s recursion value, there are plenty that don’t see nearly as much play. Older Angels ..read more

Standard is in a really interesting place right now - and not least because it’s not the one I or many other people expected. The post-Bloomburrow format has begun to settle after its long-awaited rotation, and while GB Midrange and Atraxa Ramp remain top contenders, they are surrounded on all sides by hyper-aggressive aggro decks!
It’s true that aggro is often prominent in the early days of a new metagame with its fast and proactive gameplan. But with powerful anti-aggro tools like Sheoldred, Atraxa, Cut Down, and Temporary Lockdown sticking around through rotation, it seemed like a hostile ..read more

White’s catch-up ramp can be a great way to get a lot of mana going in Commander. But how can you best make it work, and limit the times it’ll brick?
Although green is firmly the color of ramp in Commander, I would go as far as to say that white comes in a close second. In fact, I feel like the majority of games I play W/X decks, I am ahead on lands by the end of the game.
Still, there are also countless times where I’m sitting with a piece of white’s catch-up ramp in my hand, wondering when I’ll get to cast it. How can you increase your consistency when ramping in white?
