The end of the Golden Visa? What other options do I have if I want to live in Spain?

Last Monday 8 April, the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, announced that his government wishes to eliminate the Golden Visa. The Golden Visa allows one to obtain Spanish residency by investing in Spain; the minimum investment being the purchase of a Spanish property for 500.000€ or more. The reasons given for its proposed removal and the expected result of its removal, in our view, are respectively questionable and doubtful. This unsettling news has meant we have received many emails and messages from those who have either obtained a Golden Visa or are looking to apply for one imminently ..read more

Squatters & Illegal occupation of Spanish property

The law on illegal occupation of property was changed in 2020 in an effort to give better protection to property owners. Unfortunately, while some of the changes have improved the position, once squatters have been in possession for some time and can prove it is their sole residence, it can still take many months to have them removed. More recent changes to the law also give additional protection to occupiers where there are children, victims of domestic violence and other vulnerable groups. In these cases the local and regional social services can be involved to protect the occupiers. The law ..read more

De Cotta Law can provide a professional and confidential service to residents of Spain We are often asked whether a couple can choose to divorce in England or in Spain, and where they will have the greater economic advantage. Although the UK is now outside the scope of EU legislation in both countries it can still be a question of “first come, first served” which means it is important to get the right advice before proceedings are commenced. England & Wales now have no fault divorce but the financial matters may still need to be settled either by negotiation or by taking the matter before ..read more

Do you need a Grant of Probate in England or Wales? Did a relative die without leaving an English Will?
De Cotta Law Blog

It is often necessary for people living in Spain to apply for a Grant from the Probate Registry of England and Wales. Grants of Probate and letters of administration are issued by the Probate Registry of England and Wales. This could be because the deceased died without a Spanish Will but had assets in Spain. In some circumstances, the only way to deal with this is by getting a Grant. There are also occasions when a Spanish resident is one of the beneficiaries of someone who lived and died in the UK and they want to deal with all of the non-Spanish inheritance without having to go back to the ..read more
