The 2022 triathlon season has officially begun! Ironman 70.3 Texas is usually the first race of the season for West Texas triathletes. This race is a perennial favorite - it has always been a warm, welcoming atmosphere and a "gentle" (somewhat!!) way to ease into the race season. This year however, winter and spring training seemed challenging. Perhaps it was the unpredictable weather or just the effects of one more year of miles on the body, but the excitement to race is always there. Race weekend always starts with athlete check-in and the expo. Pictured below is Top Line athlete Ashley Elli ..read more

It's been a few months since I have posted an update with Top Line news so with a new race season around the corner, now seemed like an appropriate time;)!  The late season of 2021 was action-packed with Top Line athletes racing in triathlons, road races, and trail races/adventures. Before I moved to Lubbock for graduate school in 2006, I had heard of this small city in West Texas because of the infamous Buffalo Springs Lake Half Ironman. The race was known as tough, hot, windy, and hilly. For those who had the PRIVILEGE of racing it, you learned first hand, this was one of the toughest on the circuit. It wasn't long before I met race directors, Mike and Marti Greer and came to learn about their incredible influence on triathlon, not just locally, but nationwide. Buffalo Springs Lake 70.3 drew athletes from all corners of the globe. This included top professionals lo ..read more

The 2021 race season is well underway and we couldn't be more excited and grateful to be racing! With the renewed enthusiasm and appreciation of our sport, hopefully you've had a chance to revisit your goals and what you want to get out of triathlon. One of the things that draws people to this sport (I believe) is the limitless opportunities for growth; both athletically and personally. This sport has various formats, distances, locations, and opportunities to test yourself against a variety of challenges. When you complete a triathlon, you don't "just" complete the distance, you also handle a ..read more

If you live in the northern hemisphere, you're inching closer to summer and hopefully your weather is warming up nicely! You may have noticed that your body performs differently in warm/hot weather conditions.  Many athletes note a drop in performance when they are first exposed to heat in training. Have no fear, this is expected and we can plan for it. Below, I describe three key strategies for heat acclimation. Follow these and you will find you perform well in the heat and even look forward to warmer weather race conditions! 1. Exposure and acclimation For athletes to perform well in h ..read more

Creating your own Race Plan

If you're a triathlete, you know that our sport involves a lot of variables; some controllable, others not. A big reason that athletes are drawn to this sport is the challenge of putting together all three disciplines in one race and managing variables that you typically only face in a race situation. To have the best chance of success in a race, we need to have a script that we can follow (as closely as possible) for how we will handle each aspect of a race, from pre-race meals, to race morning setup, to swim/bike/run execution.  In my experience, creating and using a race plan ..read more
