Where is our coach?

As I'm sure many of our Trisutto family pondered when coach had some members of the Chinese Triathlon Team training in St Moritz in 2022, it was of little surprise to most of us when he said “I need to spend some time in China to get these guys in to competitive shape”.   I thought the way he would approach it would be two or three camps of up to a month. However I should have known that's not his way. He nonchalantly advised us that he was off to China, but didn't extrapolate that he had gone all in, and 14 months later he is still there! Not much has changed for most of us, our em ..read more

The Art of the Taper

As athletes prepare for their key races, thoughts turn to tapering. What, when and how? Tapers are an individual thing, however one can be guided by the general principle that triathlon of all distances is an aerobic sport. Even sprint distance racing is a minimum of one hour in duration. If we consider an Olympic distance, also commonly known as ‘short course’ racing, we are looking at a race that takes around 2 hours for the pro’s to complete – a time duration which is far closer to the time required for elite marathon runners to finish their event. Hence, going the distance in triathlon is ..read more

COACHING: different athletes need different approaches
Trisutto Blog

Coaching is not easy to define because it includes many things. Coaching develops people through improving their performance. The role of the sport coach can be the following to create the right conditions for learning to happen and to find ways of motivating the athletes.  Although the general coaching philosophy is based on several generally valid positive human values, but the philosophy of the coach in a concrete case is always individual and depends on his/her own. Coaching is challenging in that way because everyone responds differently. Finding the best way to motivate athletes is ..read more

10 top tips for preventing injuries

1. Listen to your body I don't know how many times my body was giving me signs and I was getting little niggles, which I often ignored leading to full blown injuries. I'm not saying worry about every little tightness, but if something is causing you to run differently or doesn't work itself out after 15 min of running or cycling then don't ignore it, get a proper diagnosis from a professional and talk to your coach about what should be done. 2. Proper Fueling It’s important to be well fueled (this includes carbs!) especially during and after intense workouts. I see this all the time. Is it a ..read more

Siri Lindley: On Triathlon

Congratulations to Siri Lindley who was recently inducted into the World Triathlon Hall of Fame. Siri joined the Trisutto squad in 2000. In 2001 she won 6 World Cup races and the World Championship. Siri was ranked world number 1 for the 2001 and 2002 seasons. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46o6A3ExL7A This is an interview I’ve kept from her time as an athlete, which I believe expresses more eloquently than I could how she made it then as an athlete and why she continues to succeed now as a coach. Siri Lindley : On Triathlon When I began the sport of triathlon, I descended upon its territory ..read more

Swimming hurts!

The one thing that never ceases to amaze me in the world of triathlon coaching, is how the swimming portion is taught, not only to the pros, but all budding age groupers. It is an industry of its own design in triathlon. The demand by people who need a hand with their swimming is staggering, and so is the money generated by companies selling 'whatever'. 'Whatever' rather than techniques... To me, as a previous state, national and Olympic swim coach, what is staggering is that it is all based around the theory of: 'How to not feel any hurt while swimming'. It is like, the magic mantra to the w ..read more

Learning from the past and applying it to the future

I have just recently read the book by James Clear on “Atomic Habits” and thought that there was some good information that would be relevant to many triathletes. Most, if not all successful triathletes have routines or habits that have contributed to making them successful in the first place, but many aspiring champions maybe be falling short. Habits are defined as a routine or practice performed regularly; an automatic response to a specific situation. At Trisutto we call this repetition, repetition, repetition. As the author so aptly states: “habits are the compound interest of self-improve ..read more

16 weeks is the magic number
Trisutto Blog

Let me share a secret for our age group followers. Our philosophy is that off a base level of fitness, 16 weeks is the magic number to maximum aerobic fitness. (This is an arbitrary number because some athletes will take a little longer, some talented athletes shorter. However, time and experience have proven it’s accuracy.) Outside these times we work on techniques and training philosophies to help athletes be faster in the long term view. If you are looking to October this year as your big race, then you may consider pacing your preparation intelligently. It’s not volume, volume, volume. Ha ..read more
