I would be remiss if I didn’t dedicate an entire blog to safety. We take inherit risks just by agreeing to go skiing or riding. Skiing is not a risk-free sport. However, we can try to mitigate risks by following certain guidelines. Guidelines set forth by the National Ski Areas Association in Your Responsibility Code* -Always stay in control -People ahead of you have the right of way -Stop in a safe place for you and others -Whenever starting downhill or merging, look uphill and yield -Use devices to help prevent runaway equipment -Observe signs and warnings, and keep off closed trails -Know h ..read more

Adjust your expectations and be realistic with your goals. A little bit of improvement for your toddler is actually a really huge accomplishment for them! They have a short attention span, they lack coordination and balance, and, remember, that their ski boots are super heavy for their little bodies! They are built top heavy and don’t have the ability to flex their ankles the same way us adults do. Remember to not expect them to ski like we do. Here are a few pointers: 1) Don’t put your toddler on skis if he/she cannot walk or balance yet 2) Enjoy a lot of snow play and have them just slide ar ..read more

I do it. We all do it. We go skiing with our children and we want to go skiing with them on some fun runs that are sometimes above their skiing ability. We over-terrain them for sure. But in my opinion, being pushed is not always a bad thing. I’m a believer that some days should be for drills and lessons (on more suitable terrain in a lesson), other days should be for practice, and other days should be purely for adventure. Skiing is a risky sport, and although we can’t prevent all injuries we can definitely mitigate risks by having fun while being safe. So, if we are going to over-terrain our ..read more

I can’t tell you how many times I have heard this from a girl’s mouth when I ask her what her goals are for her lesson. I can also say that I too was this girl when I was younger. Now I don’t care – I’m happy skiing peacefully at my own pace if others want to fly by me. But for many this is the goal! Speed! Keeping up! Fitting in! Being able to be a part of the group! So, here’s my secret sauce. We are in control of our skis, and not the other way around. Yes, there’s gravity at play and we are sliding on slippery equipment, but if we truly know how to stop and put pressure on our skis and on ..read more

I get asked about ski gear a lot. There is so much out there and honestly, technology is changing so quickly that if we wanted, we could just be continuously buying gear. First off, I am not an expert on ski gear. For specifics, I definitely recommend going to speak to someone in person at a reputable ski shop to determine what fits you and your children best. My family does this. And, I admit that although I want to give them the commission, I usually end up price checking online and buying our stuff wherever is selling at the lowest price. 1. Make sure your boots, helmet, and goggles fit! I ..read more
