The Board of Trustees of Lancaster Theological Seminary voted unanimously to appoint the Reverend Vanessa Lovelace, PhD, to be Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Seminary, effective July 1, 2019.
Lovelace, a Hebrew Bible scholar, professor, and academic administrator, joins Lancaster Seminary from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, where she is associate professor of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. The first Timothy from the first Tongan-American Disciples church has become the first ordained pastor of Tongan heritage in the Disciples. This summer, Rev. Tevita Uesi celebrated his ordination in his home church in Utah.
There are not many Disciples congregations in Utah, but the First Tongan Christian Church, co-located with Granger Community Christian Church in the Salt Lake City area, stands out. Robert O’Sullivan, a retired high school English teacher and pastor, has called for “flash choirs” of Christmas carolers to assemble frequently at the White House and throughout the land, using carol verses old and new to combat destructive chaos and remind people that Christians should work for peace, justice, care of the earth, equality and love, especially as it applies to the most vulnerable.
