We have been out spraying all the greens, surrounds, fairways, tees & immediate semi-roughs with iron on the Balcomie course  Continuing to sand inject greens when the weather allows, this allows us to help improve our profile, dilute thatch and improve surface drainage  We have started work on the foundation for our new Starters hut for the Balcomie course  Concreting the base, this will be left for 2 weeks before we erect the building to allow the base to set, hopefully the new building will be up mid/late April, the building will look like the Craighead course Starters ..read more

We have applied our spring granular fertiliser earlier this year due to how bad our winter has been due to the very high rainfall we have had  We have now completed work to the tees that we have re-leveled and extended etc over both courses  In the middle of February we were hit with another storm which has caused coastal damage and brought a lot of debris up on the course at holes 2, 4,5,14 & 15 of the Balcomie course  4th hole  15th hole We have been carrying on cutting and collecting deep rough areas on the Craighead course when weather has allowed to help us t ..read more

This winter has been very challenging with it being so wet. we have rebuilt the 3rd front greenside bunker on the Craighead course which had to be redone after it was just rebuilt due to the flooding damage  Rebuilt the 8th fairway bunker on the Balcomie course  Staff setting up the course for play  The top tee on hole 6 of the Balcomie course has been re-leveled ready to be turfed  We have solid tined the Craighead greens to a depth of 150mm to aid in drainage as it's been so wet  The 4th yellow tee on the Craighead course has been re leveled and is ready to be ..read more

Storm damage

Sunday the 29th October saw very high tides and  driving winds off the Sea, which has caused coastal damage/mess on holes 2,4,5,14 & 15 of the Balcomie course  Seaweed washed up along hole 4  The big clean up begins, hole 5 was the worst affected with actual salt water and sand etc washed over the fairway  In the last 4 weeks we have had over 150mm of rain, which is making it hard to carry out planned work, but hoping this will help dilute any salt from our grass areas from the storm  With the amount of rain, we have been out fixing tee paths and bunkers t ..read more

We have been raking and cutting then collecting the grass from our 3.5" roughs to help thin these areas out on the Craighead course  In the last 3 weeks we have been hit twice with adverse weather and storm Babet  We have made a start to cutting and collecting deep rough areas on the Craighead course  The Craighead tees and walkways have been deep solid tined to 175mm to relieve compaction and help air & water movement through the profile  We have carried out extra aeration work to the Craighead greens this Autumn to help reduce thatch levels, this consisted of min ..read more

Checking moisture levels before deciding how much irrigation to apply, this helps us reduce the amount we use and concentrate on the drier and high spots  We have purchased a new rake for raking our 3.5" roughs & deep rough areas to help thin these areas out by ripping into the base of the plant  We have applied a low rate of slow release fertiliser to the Craighead fairways to aid recovery from the Summer, this fertiliser will work away through the Autumn/winter months depending on temperatures Fairways greening up with the application of fertiliser  With it being so d ..read more

The Balcomie course greens have been sprayed with liquid fertiliser & wetting agent  Greens being cut in front of play  The weaker fairways on the Balcomie course being watered to help the seed germinate  We have been out with the drone taking pictures of the staff setting up the courses  The Craighead greens have been mini-cored to help reduce thatch levels & firm up the surfaces, this also allows better water & air movement through the profile  Once the greens were mini-cored & cleaned up they were then lightly verti-cut to take more tha ..read more

It's been a really busy time for the staff with holding the Club championship the last 2 weekends, but all went well and the courses are starting to really green up with the rain that we are receiving, the complete opposite from this time last year when we were in a 3 month drought period Greens being cut & turf ironed, with the higher rainfall we are trying to turf iron slightly more to help the surface speeds as they will naturally slow down due to the higher growth rate  The Craighead course toilets have now been painted since all the outside wood was replaced  The Craighe ..read more
