Pre-Screening Stance:
There isn’t anything about Boy Kills World that doesn’t look over the top and bonkers. So, my guess is the movie will either be a rollicking good time or something that’s just too noisy.
Post-Screening Ramble:
I love the way that Boy Kills World gets going. You get introduced to the deaf and mute Boy (Nicholas Crovetti is the young version, Bill Skarsgård is the older one, and H. Jon Benjamin provides his inner voice), and he immediately sets up the story and then kicks you right into a training montage. Most action movies build up to the inevitable flashback that tells ..read more

Pre-Screening Stance:
The lead up to Challengers has been interesting. It looks great and it’s from a wonderful director, Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name, Bones & All), but it’s as though no one cares about any of that since the film carries the potential of an on-screen Zendaya threesome. How silly and weird.
Post-Screening Ramble:
Challengers isn’t exactly what anyone is expecting and I wouldn’t place it over any of director Luca Guadagnino’s recent films, but I found it to be solid. The story revolves around a love triangle of sorts between three tennis players – there’s Tashi (Z ..read more

Nilufer Yanya – Like I Say (I Runaway)
Nilufer Yanya just announced that she’s signed to Ninja Tune and there’s a new single to go along with the news. I’m liking the 90s-lean that’s on display here.
Crumb – The Bug
Here’s the second single off Crumb’s upcoming album, AMAMA, which is due out May 17. They also just announced a tour – if you’re in Austin, you can see them at Emo’s on October 15.
Girl And Girl – Oh Boy!
This is such an infectious (and jittery) number from Girl And Girl. Their new album, Call A Doctor, will be released on May 24. For those around Austin, you can see ..read more

Pre-Screening Stance:
Monkey Man is being marketed as though it’s a new version of John Wick but something tells me it isn’t going to be anything like that film (or any of its sequels). Either way, I’m in just to cheer on Dev Patel.
Post-Screening Ramble:
As the writer, director, and star, Monkey Man is the Dev Patel show, and what a show it is. The film is centered around Kid (Patel), a fella who earns a bit of cash by throwing fights in a seedy underground ring. He’s also hellbent on avenging his late mother, so when he’s not letting himself get punched in the face, he’s working and schemin ..read more

St. Vincent – Flea
The previous St. Vincent single has been on repeat for the last month, and this (equally sharp) track is for sure going to slide in right alongside it. Her album, All Born Screaming, is due out April 26.
+/- (Plus/Minus) – Borrowed Time
+/- (Plus/Minus) are back with their first album in 10 years – Further Afield will be released on May 31. This first single is airy and really moves well.
How To Dress Well – Crypt Sustain
This is a surprisingly noisy number from How To Dress Well. Their new album, I Am Toward You, will be out on May 10 ..read more
