Art project: Kids Quill! Easy Beginner Paper Quilling with Kids at Home

With my two school age children out of school for the rest of the year, we’ve been looking for some interesting things to add to our day. They do academics and check in with teachers mainly in the morning, with more open time in the afternoon. The other week I broke out some paper quiling supplies and I taught them how to roll paper — with a kitchen skewer as a quilling tool and also just using their fingers. Paper quilling is the perfect art activity while we’re all stuck at home because it requires so few materials, and those materials are basic things most folks have around the house: pape ..read more

Minimalist Birthstone-inspired necklaces

For a while now, a little more than a year, I’ve been actively making jewelry. Before that, I had some little bits of clever paper creations that I turned into pendants, or earrings, but the piece almost always came together without a lot of intention or deeper meaning. During an online marketing course for jewelry makers, many people mentioned how they always wear their own pieces and it generates a lot of interest and is a lovely way to naturally tell someone that you make jewelry and give them a card. You become your own advertisement. Of course! Brilliant! Except, I never wore my own jewe ..read more

The other week I had the honor of making a sweet little paper art doll for a lovely customer. It was one of my more colorful designs with rainbow pennants and bright greens and yellows (she’s the one at center, in the photo above…with no hands just yet). I can never resist snapping a photo when I have multiple dolls out. It’s such a cheerful sight, no? Find the full line of little dolls here: Little People Figurines I was also *finally* able to get the last three colors of the tiny pendant necklaces photographed. The colors of these minimalist necklaces were all inspired by the colors seen w ..read more

This past week, things in the studio are slowing down - or being taken over by holiday must-dos! I did get a request for another blue worry stone and had just enough paper on hand to create on more. I think in 2020 I’ll make a few blue and purple to have some stock ahead. Do you have a special colorway you’d like to see in a paper worry stone? Let me know in the comments below! Today Wednesday, December 18th, is the last day to order in 2019. Head over to the runnerbean etsy shop by clicking on the photo above or click right here: RUNNERBEAN ON ETSY to shop now. Beginning tomorrow, all proces ..read more

Woodland animal ornaments made from paper

I’m so in love with these new little woodland animal ornaments! I began sketching the ideas in the spring and started working out the builds through the summer. There are five little cuties in the line: The fox The bear The mouse The rabbit The fawn All have small special details and for the first time ever, all have eyes! I’ve never wanted eyes on my figurines. First of all, placement of eyes is so important - get it just a little off and the whole face looks just wrong. Also, they draw so much attention to themselves, the eye is naturally drawn to that spot. But these critters needed sweet ..read more

What's on the studio desk?

Over this past week, I had a handful of made-to-order items to create: paper worry stones in colors that had sold out, and a small paper doll making a wish on a fluffy dandelion seed head (what on earth are they call when they turn all to fluffy seed?). The worry stone turned out beautifully smooth and I achieved a lovely light to dark blue gradient which is always the goal, but the papers don’t always cooperate. I was so happy that they did for this special order. I also made a pair of holiday baby ornaments as elves; so no pacifiers and no bibs. They turned out well, and were personalized o ..read more

Quilling pattern: dragonfly
Runnerbean paper art Blog

This dragonfly design has been kicking around my studio for a couple of years now. I sell finished dragonfly pendants in my Etsy shop, and decided the design, with its straightforward measurements and instruction, would make it an ideal pattern to share. While working on the pattern, I quickly realized my standard mandrels (the handles of two quilling tools and skewers found in the kitchen) are not standard for all. I tracked down sticks, skewers, and rods of similar diameters and am in the process of putting together a mandrel pack to make mandrels (some of my most often reached for tools ..read more

I’m so excited to announce my first quilling pattern: It’s a beautiful heart shaped wreath in greens, white, and yellow. The design is inspired by the spring bloom of an olive tree, which is a symbol of peace and friendship. The new Follow Your Heart Pattern is a downloadable 16-page PDF of detailed instructions along with templates, color photos, Follow Your Heart text, and a supply resource list. Find it in my etsy shop right here: Follow Your Heart quilling pattern ..read more
