Right folks, San Sebastián This was our second visit to this beautiful city in the space of 14 months and to be honest this trip was even better than the first, right down to the weather. San Sebastián has as much rain as we do here in Greater Manchester but for the duration of our visit we had clear blue skies and temperatures in the low 20's, the only rain we saw was late Saturday when we were on our way home. San Sebastián is a large curved bay, at one end is the old town and marina with the hilltop fairground at the other. Last year we stayed at the fairground end whereas this year we ..read more

Hi, We are back home from a splendid one week of Italian holiday at Pescara, more precise at Montesilvano, a small village just next to the bigger city of Pescara. The weather was sunny and around 18°C, which was really very comfortable. In the morning and evening it was adviced to wear a warming coat though, the sun really makes that difference. Palm trees, orange and lemon trees everywhere. Oranges and lemons massively growing on the trees. Unreal for us Belgians. We had alot of local food and many local Italian wines too. Everything was so delicious. You'll find all the pictures on faceboo ..read more

Trappist Westvleteren - An Update

Hi, Last weekend was a great Trappist Westvleteren weekend! A week before, I ordered us two crates (which was the maximum volume during that online purchase) at around 10am. The online ordering took place from 9am till 8pm, which is quite a long period. That really surprised me. To my upper surprise (that's another surprise) I only had to wait for about 20 seconds! Guess I was lucky. The payment was done online when you do the purchase. You have a maximum time of 10 minutes only. Those are actually the shortest 10 minutes of my life  I paid €144 for two crates of Westvleteren 12, include ..read more

Day three Our final full day in Porto and it's my birthday, so it was a quick stroll just two streets up the hill to Niclau coffee shop for a bit of brunch and this place was completely packed but just as we approached we noticed a couple inside putting their jackets on so maybe our luck will be in...and it was, they exited as we entered so we bagged their only empty table. A delicious brunch of Eggs Benedict, coffee and berry smoothie followed. Making our way back downhill in the direction of the harbour, stopping along the way to pick up a few items (those all important sausages) we hap ..read more

It's time for my birthday trip to Porto and after setting off early on our 2 hour flight we arrived in Northern Portugal, a 30 minute taxi ride later and we arrived at our hilltop hotel - The Moon and Sun. After a speedy check in we ventured out to a sunny, dry and breezy Porto, seeing as it was only  11am we decided to first visit the Bolhão market for a bite to eat and a couple of well earned coffee's. Refreshed and it's time for a bit of exploring which leads us to the harbour area and the mightily impressive Ponte Luis bridge, this was the most picturesque area for our first dri ..read more

Hi, It is always such a nice experience when we hit beer pub/tavern De Snelle Duve (The Fast Pigeon) at - nearby to Bruges - Snellegem. That magic old place exposing all those local pigeon sport attributes from the old times. https://www.facebook.com/p/De-Snelle-Duve-100057338774218/ https://www.brugseommeland.be/nl/de-snelle-duve Starting with a truly excellent Achel blond. Nowadays called Achel tripel, with a different label as been showed over here. It's not a Trappist beer anymore. The label you see here is already a transformation towards the new labels. It still carries the word "t ..read more

Hi everyone, We arrived midday Monday in a damp and cold Hamburg, so after checking into our hotel we hopped in a taxi and made our way to the main Rathausmarkt for our first experience of a true German Christmas market. This large market located in front of the town hall was filled with festive food stalls, the obvious thing was to order a couple of Mulled Wine (served in Hamburg Christmas market mugs which we kept) and a delicious Bratwurst (fresh and crisp and good value at 5€) with our Anna trying her first proper curry wurst. After exploring the market and surrounding s ..read more

Hi, Time for a special beer! Monk's Café Grand Cru - 5.5vol%. Brewed at brewery Van Steenberge. This is an "Oud Bruin" beer with sweet and sour aromas. Monk's Café Grand Cru is a Flemish Oud Bruin brewed according to the traditional rules of the art for today's beer lover. This "storage" beer consists exclusively of triple beer. They sour this beer in the tank by adding lactic acid bacteria. Before bottling this beer, it is cut with a lightly brewed pilsner to correct the alcohol content into 5.5 vol%. During the cutting process some caramel is added, which will ensure a perfect sweet ..read more

Kings - Brugge

Hi, So shocked and sad I was when I noticed a couple of months ago that Kings (formerly called De Kingsclub) here in Bruges went bankrupt. About 3 weeks ago we went there, and indeed the place was shut down with the message bankrupt on the entrance door. But see, last Sunday the place was open again, as if nothing has changed. This place is not really a beer pub to be precise. They offer about 30 quality beers at reasonable prices. Normally we always go for their precious Gouden Carolus Whisky Infused from tap, from which you always get about 40cl. @ minimum  (€4.80) But that day ..read more
