Farok J. Contractor, Ph.D., Outgoing President
As I will soon be completing my term as AIB President, while remaining a member of the Executive Board, I thought it would be useful to review the progress AIB has achieved over the past year and what remains to be done.
Only a few readers of this blog are members of the AIB. Nevertheless, some other readers may be interested in my remarks delivered at the 2022 Annual AIB Meeting in Miami this past July, which include comments about the future of globalization in the conclusion.
The AIB membership consists of 3,400 academics (and a number of cons ..read more

Since the mid-1980s, globalization has contributed to lifting more than one billion people out of grinding poverty and perhaps two billion into a middle-class consumer status. The Academy of International Business (AIB) is the premier worldwide association of more than 3,000 academics and researchers covering global business topics. The role of foreign direct investment (FDI) and cross-border trade in transforming societies and economies lie at the heart of the AIB’s purview and mission.

On November 8, 2021, it happened — as predicted by the purchasing power parity (PPP) theory: the Argentine monetary unit crossed the symbolically important threshold of 100 pesos = 1 US dollar (USD).
A lurid but sad tale. A century ago, some predicted that Argentina would soon join the ranks of advanced nations. Instead, populist governments, freewheeling borrowing and spending, and mismanagement of its economy resulted in high inflation in much of Argentina’s modern history. A ..read more

Note: The following commentary is based on my experience teaching remotely during the pandemic. It does not directly reflect on Rutgers University.
The pandemic has accelerated and legitimized online learning. The institution where I teach—Rutgers Business School (New Brunswick and Newark)—has been completely online for the past two semesters. Online instruction has benefits: it reduces costs for the university; distance becomes irrelevant—I’ve had students logging on from Singapore, Kuwait, and China; and if s ..read more

For at least 35 years, US politicians and pundits have scared the public with tales of declining vitality in US manufacturing, from Trump tweeting that “China is stealing our jobs”[1] to a recent article by a ranking congressman (Yoho, 2019) claiming that “America has lost its competitive manufacturing ed ..read more
