I wish I could say that I’m able to exercise some self-control in my consumption of Abby Jimenez’s books, but the truth is I gobble them up eagerly, always lying to myself that I’ll read just one more chapter. Just for the Summer is deliciously funny and emotional—two great attributes that work well together for an addictive read. I fell in love with Justin’s sense of humor from his very first Reddit post about his cursed love life. Whenever his relationships end, his exes go on to marry the next person they meet. When Emma DMs him that she shares the same curse, it makes for the most perfect ..read more

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week is an “April Showers” freebie. Rather than list books that feature rain on the cover, I thought it would be fun to spotlight books that made me cry buckets. Therefore, my Top Ten Tuesday topic for this week is Tearjerkers.     Bright Side by Kim Holden The main character secured a top spot on my list of favorite book heroines. I’m so happy I risked my heart to this story. I feel like a better person for having read it. Full Tilt by Emma Scott  This is a gorgeous and tender love story. I free ..read more

Review: One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware

One Perfect Couple may not be perfect, but it certainly puts the thrill in thriller. This is one creepy story where everyone’s motives are suspect. In an attempt to boost her boyfriend’s acting career, Lyla agrees to join him on a new couples-only reality show competition set on a gorgeous tropical island. From the very beginning, the reader gets the feeling that something is terribly off about the show and the people involved. Things go from eerie to downright terrifying when the island is hit with a deadly hurricane, and the contestants are left stranded with limited food and water. Emotions ..read more

Review: The Surrogate by Penelope Ward

The plot of The Surrogate sounded just messy enough to pique my interest but not so outlandish as to be implausible: dead wife and frozen eggs, grieving husband, in-laws who want a grandchild, and a surrogate who falls for the husband. I was worried the in-laws would be unreasonable, demanding, or territorial, but they are delightful. The fact that Sigmund (now there’s a name) is reluctant to become a father leads to interesting conflicts. Abby is just a kind, directionless soul who wants to do something good for others. The story fast forwards weeks and months at a time, which caused a discon ..read more

Review: The Teacher by Freida McFadden

Long story short, The Teacher just wasn’t my cup of tea. This book should have come with a trigger warning, but I understand that it would have been impossible to do so without spoiling the plot. Told from multiple viewpoints, The Teacher is broken up into short chapters that keep the story moving. The author does a good job portraying the naivete and overly dramatic nature of a typical teenage girl. I just wish the writing itself didn’t seem so juvenile. The whole plot is rather predictable, with the exception of the ending, which throws in some twists that left me scratching m ..read more

Review: Bride by Ali Hazelwood

Ali Hazelwood, the reigning queen of STEM romances, dips her toes in the paranormal romance waters with Bride. Hazelwood is an auto-buy author for me, so I was especially curious to see how she would handle a genre that is, admittedly, not my favorite.  The good news is that Misery is a fabulous character. Her dry sense of humor kept me entertained even when I wasn’t sure where the plot was heading. Lowe makes a great alpha. He’s strong, decisive, and fair but is putty in his little sister’s hands. He also has a soft spot for Misery. Unfortunately, my feelings about the story are a little ..read more

Audiobook Review: Caught Up by Liz Tomforde

Liz Tomforde has officially become an auto-buy author for me. I’m loving her Windy City series, which enriches the sports romance genre to a surprising degree. She has tackled issues of mental health, negative body image, and toxic family relationships—all against the backdrop of professional sports. Caught Up now places the spotlight on the challenges of single parenting. Go ahead and take my heart, Kai, with your selfless love for your freaking adorable toddler. The story does a good job of exploring Kai’s difficulties in finding a guilt-free work-life balance as a single father. Miller is a ..read more

Review: Nobody Like Us by Krista & Becca Ritchie

I can’t believe that one of my most favorite series has finally come to an end. *grabs tissues* After 13 books, I’m still as invested as ever in the Like Us characters. As with most endings, Nobody Like Us is bittersweet.  Krista and Becca Ritchie have taken me on an emotional rollercoaster throughout Luna and Donnelly’s turbulent journey towards happiness. This is the least gut wrenching of their three books, which was a relief to me. Will Luna get her memory back? That was the main question I had going in. Surprisingly, it wound up being less important to me than Donnelly and Luna rebui ..read more
