Despite the best intentions from our departmental leadership, HR and wellness advocates, we’re sometimes not equipped with actual tools for self-rescue. The flyers and e-mail attachments are useful, I guess, but I’m interested in actual techniques that people can adopt, employ and engage with. We need real-world tactics to help us decompress. I picked this grounding technique up while researching ideas for our post-Jiu-Jitsu mindset development exercise.
The thing that really speaks to me about this technique is that it is transferable. You could use this for yourself after a difficult call or ..read more

In the expansive world of online self-help gurus, data-driven science communicators and snake-oil supplement sellers, there’s a specific chase for understanding Dopamine. It’s a commonly misunderstood driver for our motivation and, by most people’s own admission (if they’re really reflecting on it) a temptress for bad choices. If you take on the task of understanding what dopamine is, you’re actively participating in resisting the corporate conquest of our menta ..read more

This article has sat in a browser tab on my laptop for more than a month. Not because it’s all too hard to write. And, not because it’s too complicated to think about. But, because this idea – the ‘Heroic Ideal’, that is – asserts a few things that create a foundation for pretty much everything we do. That’s a heavy thing to consider. Further, it’s a tremendously heavy thing to write about.
Nonetheless, I find this back-burnered article simmering to the top of my to-do’s. Despite my sometimes focused efforts to cast this idea aside, I’m bound to the truth. The Heroic Ideal as a premise for det ..read more

In December of 2023, I had a familiar pull. About every 6 months, I want to refine what I’m doing. And, for some reason, that makes me want to get a little group together to do the same. I think it has something to do with the ‘mana’ of group settings. Or, that’s the way The Rock phrases it. Hosting the #unchallenge allowed me to dive into that ethereal substance; that magic that is produced by small groups.
I wanted to host a group to help work on some things that I would have been working on anyway. Fitness, personal development, core values. Searching – actively questing for the extra. I th ..read more

Sometimes, in the middle of the day, I will have this sporadic ping pong ball of an idea pop into my brain. It’s not helpful at all, and in some ways, these ideas can be responsible for setting me back. Sometimes, it just sounds like ‘it doesn’t matter.’ Other times, it’s more pervasive. These ‘automatic thoughts’ can sometimes lead to piss poor feelings about our body image, social circles, obstacles in our jobs or any other assortment of easy targets.
I think ‘automatic thoughts’ are one of those things that most people might not know a lot about. Like most personal development tools, knowin ..read more
