As years-long waitlists and sky-high hype crash into a changing market filled with alternatives, it really begs the question: is the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona still worth chasing? While Rolex accessibility fatigue has worn some enthusiasts out, others remain as devout and committed as ever, always eager to bend the knee to the crown. But why is that exactly? What is it about such a simple watch that keeps hooking far more buyers than there are available watches? Let’s dig into it. History It would be foolish of me to run in circles, recounting the same story we’ve told a number of times before ..read more

The Rolex “Big Red” Daytona is a legend—plain and simple—and the Rolex 6265 “Big Red” Daytona is an especially sought-after reference in this highly collectible category. Today, we’re going to explore the history, the mechanical ins and outs, and other key details of this coveted Daytona variant.  The ref. 6265 Daytona is a hand-wound chronograph with metal bezel, coming in at just under 38 mm in diameter. In keeping with the “Oyster” insignia on the dial, it features screw-down pushers for water resistance, and a large screw-down crown. The nickname “Big Red,” as you might have guessed ..read more

In 2020 we’ve witnessed a flourishing of colors across the Rolex line of watch references.  Most notably this year, the Oyster Perpetual line was unveiled with a bright spectrum of dials.  Off on the sidelines while the colorful OPs were stealing the show, the green Submariner was busy making its comeback as the reference 126610LV. At this point, the watch buying community is fairly comfortable with the diverse color palette Rolex employs, even among staid and otherwise utilitarian “sports” references, but many collectors rightfully have a soft spot for the variants of green Sub tha ..read more

Outstanding Outliers: The Rolex Milgauss 116400 and 116400GV

The Rolex Milgauss arguably has a more interesting heritage than its famous cousins, the Submariner and GMT Master. Also dating back to the mid-1950s, the Milgauss could be found strapped to the wrists of the world’s brightest minds, helping them keep track of time while practicing their craft amongst strong magnetic fields. To recap the Milgauss raison d’etre, Rolex created the watch with shielding strong enough to withstand 1,000 gauss (hence the name “Mille-gauss”) for scientists like the ones working at CERN in Geneva. Magnetic fields can wreak havoc upon the accuracy of movement componen ..read more

Modern Yet Classic: The Rolex Day-Date in Everose Gold Ref. 228235-0025

The first thing that comes to mind when many think of the Rolex Day-Date, is the many U.S. Presidents who have worn the watch. I mean, the model’s bracelet is commonly known as the “President”! Many other notable people including Warren Buffett, the Dalai Lama, and even Tony Soprano have been known to wear the model as well so it’s pretty clear why having one on your wrist is modern shorthand for “I made it”. It is one of the only Rolex models that is offered solely in precious metals and while most have traditionally colored dials such as champagne, silver, white, and black, Rolex has occasi ..read more

A Daytona Named Le Mans: The Rolex Daytona Le Mans Ref. 126529LN

Limited and commemorative edition watches are so common these days that it’s hard to keep track of them all. Sure, they work well to attract attention and drive collectability (at least at first), but the market has quickly become oversaturated with them. Rolex is one of the few brands that rarely (if ever) produces a limited or commemorative edition watch. Some models are produced in small undisclosed quantities, and the crown has been known to release a new model for a specific anniversary here and there, but not to the same extent as many other brands. This year, seemingly out of left fiel ..read more

Vintage in a Modern Package: Rolex GMT Master II 126718GRNR

Rolex brought more than its fair share of interesting new releases to Watches & Wonders 2023, including the brand new Perpetual 1908 collection and an updated Daytona with a platinum model now featuring a display caseback. It was a more under the radar release from the Crown that really piqued my interest though. For the first time since 2018, Rolex brought yellow gold back to the GMT-Master II, and I have to say, they hit it out of the park. While the new Ref. 126718GRNR is clearly a modern watch, there are some intriguing vintage callbacks in this release that are worth discussing. Like ..read more

As large as Rolex is, the powerhouse has only a dozen or so core models, each coming with a limited number of dial variants. You might see different sizes or slightly different dial colors, but generally speaking, Rolex keeps its collections tight. They get it right with the models they offer, and those offerings satisfy their massive following of dedicated enthusiasts. For 95% of collectors, this is fantastic; the brand knows what the customer wants and delivers just that. The other 5%, however, are looking for something different. When everyone is wearing roughly the same Rolex without much ..read more

Rolex is the most known name in the watch industry. Strangers on the street may know nothing about watches, but they undoubtedly know the name Rolex, and profess it to be the best watch. If you are one of those people, and wish you knew more about Rolex than that it allegedly is “the best”, we can help. This is your crash course in Rolex.
