We turned everything out on green rye pasture today, April 28th. It feels amazing, so amazing. We have never stopped feeding hay so early in the spring before. All I can think about is last year. At this point last year, we were preparing for the 2022 drought 2.0. and all of our cows were on a barren dryland field. Sand blew every day because it was so dry and every morsel of nutrition those cows ate came from a hay feeder. Last year the cows were embarrassingly thin, and the calves looked rough and mediocre from a harsh winter. Even though we fed an exorbitant amount of feed to them from the ..read more

Things That I Like~

Things that I like, are to hear Sandhill cranes fly over my head in the spring and fall and the song of a meadowlark on a summer day the smell of spring in the early morning and lightening bugs flashing late at night in July to see the brome grass dance in a summer breeze and the bluestem turn a fiery color in the fall when a horse walks out, ears pricked forward and when he turns on dime for a cow the first light of morning on the horizon and when the sunset turns bright oranges, purples, blues and pinks the way the light shines warm after a thunderstorm and the way the grass is Ireland gree ..read more

It’s time to saddle up girls. We’ve got pairs to turn out. Hurry up, put on your boots and spurs. Go catch your horses and saddle up. Mom, my boots are too small. Oh great, right now? Can you wait? No, they hurt my feet. OK, let’s go see if we’ve got a bigger pair downstairs. Let me help you brush your horse. Can I try to put the saddle on? Oh, you almost had it. Here let me help. The oldest sets the gates, she’s an old hand by now. The youngest guards it. That’s the first step to learn. Let’s work as a team. We’ll pinch them off the fence. You go ride around them. I’ll push forward as well. E ..read more

Just Sit With Me~

“Do you have time for a cup of coffee before you leave?” “Yep, I do.” We both need to run. Sitting down for fifteen minutes won’t cost us that much, but it seems so. I feel like we need to stop wasting precious daylight and get out the door. We both have business calling our names, nagging us in different directions and once we walk out that door it will be at a full sprint knowing we won’t see each other again until 9:00 p.m. that night. So, these fifteen minutes are important, and I am going to force myself to savor them. Life is wildly busy, and I hate that. It seems we are constantly runn ..read more

A Convoluted Life~

A vomit of thoughts puked onto a page. Don’t try to clean it all up. At times I am woefully lonesome, and lost. I suppose if I think about it, I have always been so. Always searching, to be something, or I should say, someone, great. Worthwhile. A longing, a deep desire, that’s Always been elusive. Maybe it doesn’t exist. Now I know I was never going to measure up. There would always be fault found. A very toxic way to live, I suppose. Trying to measure up to one’s eye’s all the time. Making it a goal of a life’s worth. At least I know now. Knowledge is power. But boy the damage has been done ..read more

One is on a mission to get there. One is slowly poking along. One is trying to turn back. One is trying to start a fight. One is the big hookin’ bull. One is the whipped-out bunch quitter. One is wanting to go his own way, and One is wanting to stop. And when you get there…well, one will be standing in the gate ready to fight. Bulls are fun. Although, they actually were pretty easy to get along with this time. XO Megan ..read more

Winds of Change~

Winds of change, barrel down mountain slopes, across the plains. Storm clouds blacken the horizon. Bright veins flash, wildly insane. The winds whirl a diabolic charade. A banshee screams her high-pitched wail. The evil one slyly grins with approval, as uncertainty rises without quell The acrid smell of death rides hard atop the tempest’s back. Whippin’ and a spurrin’, fate mobilizes into her foreboding hack. The storm rises to a crescendo. The winds whip and chafe. The evil one blocks the Son and the world staggers in disbelief. Surrounded in swirling dark it seems as if hope is lost. Stay fi ..read more

The quick rundown: -Foggy. It has been incredibly foggy. Today was the first day we saw the sun rise since last Thursday. If that “90 days from fog” saying holds true, then our branding is going to get rained out. It has been so foggy that I may or may not have walked half a pivot in the wrong direction on my way home. Why was I walking, you might ask? Well, the frost had gone out of the ground, the snow melted, and it was muddy. Therefore, we (Ty) got stuck, and we needed a tractor to get us out. In his defense, the tire slipped into a pivot track. Mud was flying, cows were staring, and we we ..read more

Ducks and Geese~
This Cowgirl's Story

Duck and geese chatter filled the night air as we stepped out of the vehicle. What an astonishing sound for the first of February! My thoughts were immediately taken back to the Sandhills, where the plethora of lakes always were overflowing with the sounds of waterfowl. At our home there, we lived in a big house that sat at the edge of a lake where I loved to watch the ducks and geese, mud hens and muskrats, swans, and pelicans swim back and forth throughout the year. With big bay windows only feet from the shoreline it was like looking through at an arboretum of birds! The springtime was my ..read more
