Never Lose Sight of Your Priorities

One thing I’ve always been proud of is my ability to stay focused. I can keep my eye on the metaphorical ball even if it’s moving fast. This kind of hyper-focus can be both a strength and a weakness. On one hand, I’m steadfast in reaching my goals and moving forward. On the other hand, I can lose sight of the myriad of priorities in my life outside of those goals. Today, I’m going to reflect on some of my top priorities and how I take the time to focus on them.  Bring all of yourself, all the time. As an entrepreneur, I believe there is no such thing as work-life balance. My work is such ..read more

The Changes You Never Saw Coming

Losing Marcia, my wife of 14 years was incredibly difficult. Her absence created a real void in my life, and suddenly nothing seemed as important as my family. Of course, life-events like this change people. It certainly changed me, and as a result, my perspective became different regarding life and how to move forward. It’s funny how change and resolve work. You make a decision to change one thing in your life and, all of a sudden, you see everything else as changeable too. Nothing felt permanent except for my family. Nothing felt certain except for my determination for and dedication to them ..read more

What’s Your Origin Story?

Every couple of months there seems to be a new comic book movie out in the theaters. While the insects, superpowers, etc. are all a bit different, there tend to be the same hard-hitting themes. Where we are headed doesn’t have to be determined by where we’ve come from or been; however, those experiences and relationships can definitely create lasting impressions and motivations that propel us in any number of directions. Look at any individual and they are the sum of many complicated parts and influenced by a unique history. The path to success for each person is different, as is their ‘origin ..read more

What Really Defines Success?

What Really Defines Success? I’m often asked at what point I realized that I had made it, that I had become successful, and I always answer that it depends on how you define success. For a lot of people, success and satisfaction are about money. If that’s the case, then success came in the venture I pursued after our stint in the Caribbean and Latin America. Preferred Medical Imaging operated in that same imaging industry and the feeling of finally feeling some success came a couple of months after we opened the Rock wall imaging center. The money I had left from selling Paradigm Healthcare wa ..read more

Trying New Things Sometimes Requires Going New Places  Sometimes, forging new paths and opportunities requires us to branch out of our comfort zone. The period of time, when I established Paradigm Healthcare and took it to countries outside of the US, would prove to be some of the most impactful years in my life as a businessperson and owner/operator.  Our sights were first set on Trinidad where we had to fight for our presence in that country. We needed the minister’s permission to operate and made a compelling argument for the benefits that our technology would bring to his country ..read more

At The End of the Day, Relationships Matter Most

In business, relationships are more important than capital, ideas, infrastructure, or profitability. Relationships have unlocked opportunity after opportunity in my career. Strong relationships with banks have gotten me loans when I probably didn’t qualify for them. Relationships with mentors and customers have helped me to overcome temporary shortfalls. Relationships with partners and competitors have allowed me to take risks, try new things, and view strategy through a different lens. Relationships with employers and employees have multiplied my output and brought meaning to my work. In life ..read more

They Didn’t Teach Me That at Jones County Junior College

Everyone has some silly line that makes the family giggle. Ours is “They didn’t teach us that at Jones County Junior College.” I didn’t really recognize that I was saying that until my young son, Joey, pointed it out one time. When talking about overcoming business challenges, new business strategies, or wins, I’d usually end the conversations with “Yep, they didn’t teach me that at Jones County Junior College.” So often, we go to school with hopes and dreams of becoming successful, only to come out ill-equipped and still lacking the know-how of what to do when and if that happens. I can’t cou ..read more
