Risk Warning: Trust, But Verify…..

On the fifth check of my passport at Paris’s Orly airport I did wonder. Will trust die before our planet dies? Both are under severe threat and, yet, I’m hopeful. Let’s take a look at three particular examples of widely-held mistrust where recent developments might challenge the negativity. First, some history. Ronald Reagan’s signature phrase in nuclear disarmament talks with the Soviet Union was derived, ironically, from an old rhyming Russian proverb: Trust, but verify. Of course, it was tough to trust the Kremlin but technology, in the form of satellite imagery, was the critical verificati ..read more

Another Heroic Age Begins…..

I’m nervous. My trip to Kenmare this week isn’t quite in the league of those heroic voyages chronicled in ancient Greek mythology but the dress code request on the invite pumped the pulse rate for a moment. Just a moment. The invitation to recreate the year of 1897 in a gathering of mostly strangers from the creative world seemed like an opportune way to ditch my far-from-hip personal wardrobe and hide behind Victorian repression. Party on, but still I’m nervous. I have this nagging feeling that the years 1897 and 2024 might have more in common than we’d like to imagine. Indeed, Mark Twain wou ..read more

Countdown To Trend Exhaustion…?

It’s day 96 of my 100-day no alcohol challenge, so who’s counting? I’m certainly not exhausted. Quite the contrary, but recently I have been prone to describe the benefits as “over-rated”. However, this proximity to completion does focus the mind on other things potentially ending in the world of business and investment. In particular, and by pure coincidence, in my day-to-day risk role I’m seeing some multi-year business trends begin to stall or enter new phases of growth. But, first let’s deal with a monetary shift. The consensus view on inflation and interest rates was that both were on a d ..read more

Welcome To Growing Sports Opportunity

“Sports is now no longer a hobby for rich guys” was the introductory quote in this week’s Fortune magazine profile of ex-Goldman Sachs dealmaker Gerry Cardinale. The day before, it was the turn of an earlier Gravitas name-drop and breakfast ‘buddy’, Todd Boehly, to appear in Forbes magazine. One owns AC Milan, the other Chelsea FC – both former investment bankers. Two articles in two days….hmmm. Curiosity tweaked, I did a bit more reading and my sense is that sport as a business has evolved significantly and is staring down the barrel of a seismic technology shift. Let’s start with evolution ..read more

Buying Privately Begins To Work Out

So, Adam Neumann wants to buy WeWork out of bankruptcy, and Don Poorleone is apparently a billionaire again. Yep, the Donald’s social media platform, Truth Social, has cracked a $7 billion valuation by moving from the private market to listing on a public market, the Nasdaq exchange in this instance. Amazingly, this valuation is based on annual revenues of barely $3 million and operating losses of almost $50 million. That doesn’t work for me but perhaps a Trump Bible (oh Lordy) is needed or a quick chat with Adam Neumann. Remember Adam tried to list WeWork publicly via IPO  in 2019 with a ..read more

How To Trade A Trump Win

The financial text books and academia will tell you that stock markets tend to reflect investor views 6 to 9 months ahead of events. In financial ‘jargon monoxide’ it is said that stock markets ‘discount’ future events or, in main street terms, it’s a bet. It should also be said that this is real investment money taking a view. Bluntly, opinions are cheap, even worthless. So, when I read the frequent headlines about poor polling numbers for President Biden and a likely November election win for ‘The Accused’, Donald J Trump, my instant reaction is to check the ‘money view’. Polling responses a ..read more

Time For A UK Recovery?

Crikey, twice in one week. A positive thought on the UK. Maybe, it’s my subliminal way of keeping the rugby gods happy before Twickenham? It’s certainly not Rishi Sunak’s sole splitting toe-curler of an interview with Grazia – surely the place where political careers go to die or promote blissful dishwasher habits. No, seriously. Anyway, Budget Day comes this week in the UK but that won’t move the recovery dial. No, I’m looking for inspiration elsewhere and, as fortune would have it, we hosted a launch event in London last week. The guest speaker on the night, Chris Johns – author, podcaster ..read more

Fintech Is The Forgotten Network Card To Play

Brexit has delivered a win. There, I said it. Now, before you all head off to lobby on my behalf for a co-anchor slot on GB News with the Moggster, Bad Enoch and the Rishibot, there’s a distinct possibility I could be clutching at correlation rather than causation. However, the numbers – for a change – are real. According to KPMG’s bi-annual report, Pulse of Fintech, last year was a tough year for global fintech with funding levels hitting a 6 year low. The UK did not escape the bear market as its $12.3 billion of new investment represented a 34% drop. But….the UK remains, by far, the capital ..read more

Only one sleep to go until “Sixmas”, or the 6 Nations. Giddy. Another 28 days to go in the “Freezbrury” cold water swim challenge. Not so giddy. Such is the emotional ebb and flow of life but what do we make of the January investment emotional roller-coaster? Dare we say January was a game of three ‘halves’? The early days of the year saw markets puke, only for the next three weeks to see markets roar higher on familiar big tech AI giddiness, interest rate cut hopes and stronger economic numbers out of the US and Asia. Then, more fear. As always, the cost of money (rates) drives all asset mark ..read more

The Value Of Good Times Revisited

My first year on this planet was the first for humanity on the moon. A good year but no memory of it. Probably my earliest happiest memory was lying on the floor playing with Airfix toy soldiers in a Waterloo battle scene at Christmas time as Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘The Boxer’ played on my parents’ hi-fi. Happy times, and always grateful for plenty more over the following decades. However, last week another ‘good times’ feeling was prompted by the radio belting out “The Boxer”, quickly followed by a news update on another lunar expedition. Yep, it was Japan’s turn to visit the moon but also a ..read more
