The impact of World War I was felt throughout all the nations who were involved in that conflict. The losses hit Australian families hard as their loved ones died so far from home and were interred, or remembered, in places where they were unlikely to ever visit. War Memorials became a local way of remembering their dead and it is an unusual town of any size in Australia which doesn’t have one.
Travelling interstate during the year we came across this one which honours those who joined the Snowy River recruitment march in January 1916. While it commenced in the town of Delegate, men joined fro ..read more

Join me on my Cemetery Searching expedition for the 2023 A to Z Blog Challenge. I’ll be re-visiting some cemeteries and preparing for a wish list of others. Some family members will be mentioned but I also have an interest in German family graves as well as those of people born in Co Clare Ireland.
Dorfprozelten emigrants
Among the 64 emigrants from Dorfprozelten in Bavaria in the mid-19th century were three families with the surname Zöller. Like all German names this can pose research problems as much because of the mis-transcription in indexes as the varied Anglicisation of the name. Two of ..read more

Victoria, Australia
Mr Cassmob’s family tree mainly grew in Victoria, so we have made occasional trips to visit a few places of relevance even though gravestones are few and far between.
Today we’re going to have a look at some cemeteries in the centre-north-east of the state. Being a Queenslander ..read more

Urana, New South Wales
It is believed that my 2xgreat grandmother, Mary O’Brien, emigrated together with her sister Bridget. Certainly Bridget’s death certificate confirms she spent a year in Queensland (then Moreton Bay) before moving to New South Wales. Why she made the move has been lost in time ..read more

Today is ANZAC Day Down Under and we remember the sacrifice of lives in service of their country. We also remember that these deaths left behind tragedy and sorrow among their families and communities around our own country. Memorials play a part of possibly every town in Australia as few families would ever be able to visit their lost sons and daughters. This is my 2023 commemoration (and yes I haven’t muddled my alphabet).

Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Glenmore Historic Cemetery, Rothbury, NSW
It may seem strange that I’m including this under Pokolbin but in my notes when I took these photos back in 2006, I’d noted it as a small cemetery near Pokolbin. This site tells us a little more about it. http://www.interment.net/data/aus/nsw/hunter/glenmor ..read more
