Dave's Basement Tracks

Ok some of you know I've been spending more time in Reddit finding more people who are more like me; music lovers who are also readers and thinkers about the format.  Of course it's not perfect, Spotify still tends to rule the playlist posts; but that tends to be today's format.  I was attracted into a Sub-Reddit Country Music, though I was a little cautious because I didn't consider myself a modern country fan.  The sub is more mixed Americana so I've been enjoying finding new music.  Cari Lacey was one of them, and the poster's enthusiasm pushed me to buy her music in A ..read more

DBT #288 Abuse Awareness Playlist
Dave's Basement Tracks
by Dave Schipper

This week I made a visit down to Gundersen Lutheran to have my bandage chained on my hand with trigger finger surgery, and yes I'll spare you the ugly Frankenstein picture.  I did see banners up for April being Sexual Abuse Awareness month.  Immediately I thought of two songs and figured I could make one of the saddest playlists that I have made.  Guys are basically jerks and some behave themselves better than others; some are just lost in whatever power, insecurity, or mental illness can be imagined.  That later part manifests way to easy, and are so wrong.  ..read more

DBT #287 RIP Dickey Betts
Dave's Basement Tracks
by Dave Schipper

The Allman Brothers Band was likely the most important band I followed in my whole life.  Sure I'm a huge fan of Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, and Greg Brown to name just a few; but those artists could be a solo act and I would love them.  The Brothers were rich in uniqueness for what they helped create "Southern Rock"  My God what band would do two drummers, and my disinterest in drums is thrown out the window when it comes to this band.  Jaimoe and Butch Trucks so played off each other.  Duane was so incredible in his short life; and his brother Gregg was the on ..read more

DBT #286 4-20 Don't Bogart that Song
Dave's Basement Tracks
by Dave Schipper
1w ago
This playlist would be notorious for 4/20, my inspiration was Alex Toast asking in Facebook for Playlist recommendations.  Well I read get off your butt and make a DBT Playlist.  So while I thought the title could be as simple of 4/20 but then I thought about "Get High Playlist" "Here's to Marijuana" "Songs to get high" "Ballad of the Stoner", oh boy I settled with a tie into the playlist. Yes I know and googled many other songs for the day, but my list has the big rule of I own it vinyl, cd or digital; no streaming here.  I was going to stop at 12, so you got some freeb ..read more

DBT #285 Around Town Video Playlist Highlights
Dave's Basement Tracks
by Dave Schipper
2w ago
Now that I have over 280 Videos recorded and posted into my Around Town Playlist, I thought I should give you a post to find some of my favorites.  Of course I have very loose with Around Town, it's more like where ever I'm listening and recording live music.  I am notorious for trying to get into the front row so I can be discreet holding my phone in my lap lately; not to secretly record but to not take away the attention of either the audience or the artist from the music.  During our Bluff View House concert series, I've tried to remember to set up a tripod and recor ..read more

DBT #284 April
Dave's Basement Tracks

Of course I need very little push to make a playlist, and in a Facebook group the administrator said, "Hey let's do a playlist for April" (or kind of like that..Ha) Here's what I found without a search in Discogs to see what else I would have in Vinyl and CDs. The playlist if pretty short and got my wife's approval as we went out to vote and shop yesterday. 1) April - Humbird Not sure if Siri has written a song for all 12 months yet. Pharmakon by Humbird A pretty cool solo video that needs more love too. 2) April 7th 2020 - Chicago Farmer Cody's song about the pandemic an ..read more

DBT #282 Happy Easter Jesus
Dave's Basement Tracks

Yes I had an idea to create a serious playlist of my favorite Christian songs for this week and then Amanda Pascali sent her Patreon supporters a cover of "Plastic Jesus"... well I am a believer that Jesus had a sense of humor; he went out the way to reach out to lepers, prostitutes, and tax collectors while he knew that would tick off the righteous back then.  Plus who does he first appear to when he rises, WOMEN; and they were so disrespected (yes even more than today) back then.  A quick search and I was 70 songs with Jesus in the title in the digital library, and 56 albums in m ..read more

DBT #281 Sacrifice
Dave's Basement Tracks
by Dave Schipper

Being Holy Week, I thought about doing a playlist of significant Christian tunes, and I still might.  My mind wandered to just the Sacrifice that was made on Good Friday, and Molly Brandt's song "I Surrender to the Night" came on and I said, yep that will be the first song.  This playlist is a cross section to recently added music to my digital library, so well find a sacrifice thread through them. 1) Surrender to the Night - Molly Brandt Last Friday we had a chance to see Minneapolis' Molly Brandt at the Root Note, and did grab a video.  We didn't buy a physical cd as we s ..read more

DBT #280 Women's Herstory Month 2024
Dave's Basement Tracks

My musician friend Beth Bombara shared a playlist (Spotify and Apple) streaming playlist for this month and I got me thinking what would be mine look like.  I tried to reach back to songs and artist that really have touched me over the many years, yet I tried to make it a little new for listening (which I do a lot of these playlists).  Ok one can easily critique, where's Janis Joplin, Carole King, Tina Turner, Sheryl Crow, Joan Baez, Aretha Franklin, Judy Collins, Loretta Lynn, Gillian Welch, or Lucinda Williams and you can check out Beth's 15 song playlist here for others.  ..read more

Back in 2022 I started following this Canadien country singer when he put out his "Songs My Friends Wrote" and I really haven't spent enough time with that album when I saw he was releasing a new one on Feb 23, 2024.  It looked interesting and I clicked it to my wishlist.  At March Bandcamp Friday I picked up and it has been my most played album since. (Molly Tuttle's Grammy Winner "City of Gold" has been second)  Yes, if US's country music sounded like this I'd be planning to attend a bunch of Country Fests, but sadly it doesn't and we'll hope that Cord gets to the Big Top s ..read more
