We're finally going to talk about why cows are the love of my life. And it's going to get ugly. Please leave if you can't handle PTSD-related topics. I'm not going to go light, so the time is now. Thank you. Okay, so if you are still here I was raped by my father starting at the age of...I don't know when. I was passed around by uncles, family friends, all members of the church I grew up in. All good people, allegedly, who turned mean when we were alone. I have a lot of trauma. I don't have anything against the Mormon church. I do think it needs to look at itself and its values. I don't think ..read more

Family and Business: a Good Idea?

I’m about to say some unpopular things here, so get ready. A lot of the time we’re told that family are the ones that will always have our back. That we will always be safe around them. That they have our best interests at heart. And they…don’t. They have their own best interest at heart because they can’t help the way they're seeing it: it’s always from their own perspective. They can’t jump into your life and see what you see. They simply don’t know. And so it’s important to behave as if your business was entirely your own. As if it was a separate entity from your family, supportive or not ..read more

Advertising With Heart: Don't Lose Your Morals

Confession time: I learned copywriting from an Instagram ad. I was at a bump in my life (long story there), needed a career change, and my wife sent me an ad for the Comprehensive Copywriting Academy. It was a good program. I learned a lot (I am learning a lot) and I'm proud of who I am and what I got out of it. I know I work hard, combined my knowledge with what the program offered and research gleaned online. But I don't have a lot of social capital from my little program. The CCA has not made it on my resume. Under "special training" I don't write that I did a whole course in three months ..read more

Don't Go it Alone: Connections Are Necessary for Human Beings

LISTEN, we're social creatures. I hate to say it because I have difficulties connecting with others. Sometimes, on my really bad days, I forget how to talk to others. I get really introverted and feel like the only one of my species. This is symptomatic of fibromyalgia, the ailment I suffer from. It's combined with a lot of other things, both physical and mental, that just don't make a lot of sense. The whole thing is a brain melt. And sometimes, I'd rather just be left alone to let my thoughts do their screaming in peace. But I am not a singular creature. I love having people around me. I lov ..read more

(And Here’s Why) Get it Done: It’s been weighing on your mind for months. That annoying little feeling like you should be doing something. You know what it is, too: your bio. And you should get it done. Here’s 4 reasons why: 1. Bios Make You Legit Life here on the internet is strange and scary. We don’t know many people. We might not even know the lay of the land. It’s like the Wild West: things can get unethical. We’re hyper-aware that people could steal our money and think nothing of it. Trust is difficult to get and difficult to maintain. Plus, folks may want to make a connection but may no ..read more

✨ Getting to Know You ✨ Hi friends, I do a lot of reviews of Etsy shops on Facebook and as a copywriter, I’m all about the words. That means I’m looking at three areas: Announcements, About me, and Product descriptions. The proper use of these areas can get people from casual browser to dedicated follower. You just have to fill in the blanks. (Note that this is Etsy specific, but will also work for your website, instagram page, or other media). Area 1: Announcements This is the first page people see when they click on your Etsy and is often where visitors get an unpleasant warning about shipp ..read more

You may be thinking your business doesn’t matter. That it’s not very big or loud. That it’s not making an impact because it doesn’t have 5 million customers and such a large Instagram following the app itself is tilted. That’s not true. You are so valuable and here’s why: People Need You Business owners need to be visible as their queer, authentic selves. It’s scary in the world today. We can get fired from jobs, have our dedication to our country get questioned and our right to serve taken away, and members of our population are tragically being murdered in the streets. It isn’t easy to be n ..read more
