Making New Waves
The Ugly Dame

When I started this blog all the way back in 2016 I planned on it being only my Lutterloh sewing projects and my research about women's fashion in WWII Germany. Gradually that changed and I added my sewing projects from other patterns, then true vintage I had acquired, then my thoughts on how to get a vintage look and more, and more, and more. The way the blog looks now as far as content goes was not how I originally envisioned it. My life changed and so to my blog's content. Change happens, it's natural. So that is why I think a fuller transformation is needed. I have decided to start a ne ..read more

My Make and Mend Dress
The Ugly Dame
by Jennie
10M ago
I have taken this one waaaay to long to get up here. But hey, that's life sometimes. So, I am really happy with how this dress turned out in more ways than one because for starters the end result is a cute shirtwaist dress (and you know how much I love a good shirt waist dress) and second, I managed to salvage a dress I made all the way back in 2018. I wanted to save this dress because I really liked the print and I did not want to let it go. My attachment to this fabric is in part because when I bought it when I was on vacation with my mom and it brings back all those good memories ..read more

1940s "One Yard Apron"
The Ugly Dame
by Jennie
11M ago
Another apron from my Eva Dress Gift card win: The 1940s "one yard apron". I made mine up in a grey small, printed cotton and then finished the edges in my own made bias tape. I had some white braid trim in my sewing drawer that I used to trim the pocket edges. What attracted me to this apron was that it was large, full coverage, and used only a few main pieces - the front, the shoulder, back straps, and pockets. This was so easy to put together but I would put this pattern in the intermediate category because of all the bias tape that is used to finish the edges. Cutting out, pressin ..read more

May Vintage Haul (and the treasures I picked up during Tulip Time)
The Ugly Dame
by Jennie

During Tulip Time in May, I did a little treasure shopping and I found a few gems I had to take home. To start, the Wooden Shoe Antique Mall. Here I found some cute items including these yellow gloves, egg yolk yellow beaded necklace and a lace hankie with Holland on it. It was a cute little souvenir item. Best of all three items looked adorable with my Tulip Time pin . . . .I love it when the pieces I buy blend really well with the pieces I already have. Then I picked up some little figurines from Occupied Japan - a little Dutch Couple with geese and a little girl with a wheelbarrow ..read more

My Tips for a Vintage Styled Wardrobe this Summer
The Ugly Dame
by Jennie
11M ago
Summer is officially here and today I offer up to you my tips on what to wear in the summer for that vintage look. When it comes to warm, or hot, weather vintage looks I have a few go to items in my closet and I have a few pieces that I look for when I go shopping if I am in the mood to add to the collection. In short, some of my summer pieces are large, brimmed hats, cool rayon dresses, sandals, white gloves, and floral corsages.  When I am not working on the farm, this is what I wear. Otherwise, its hard-wearing pants and cotton blouses. Far from glamorous and covered in sweat and dirt ..read more

Ensemble in Grey
The Ugly Dame
by Jennie

I know grey is not the most exciting color in the world but to me it is classic, sophisticated, and timeless. This late 40s, early 50s cotton shirtwaist dress is a great example of what can be done with a plain color like grey. Accenting this piece is shirring at the bodice, little bows, rhinestone adorned buttons, and a matching belt. Although the belt had some rust stains on it, they do not bother me in the least. . . I have not yet tried to wash them out but I don't think they detract from this grey cutie. When I found this dress, not too far away was a grey hat that I thought was ..read more

Deco Shirtwaister

Here is probably the most 1930s thing I have in my wearable wardrobe to date. The dress pattern is a 1940s one from Eva Dress Patterns but the print is a 1930s one done by Telalinda fabrics. I got the fabric from a remnant sale and really liked it. It was also different for me in terms print and even color. I liked the minty blue green and the tomato reds in the print. It was also priced right, and I do love a bargain. The dress pattern was one I liked because it was clean and simple although it was a couple sizes too large for me. I did take it in quite a bit, but I left some of the ..read more

The 1941 "Necktie Apron"
The Ugly Dame

I won a $25 gift card to Eva Dress! I was excited when I won one and I spent it all on apron patterns including this one, the 1941 Necktie Apron made up of narrow strips sewn together and pressed to create a fun accordion effect. I was so excited to give this one a try and even more so when I realized I had all sorts of narrow odds and ends of my mom's quilting fabric sitting in my fabric cabinet. They were too small for my normal projects, but I didn't want to toss them out. This apron was the perfect project to use them up.  I chose a selection of different colors not because I ..read more

Two Piece Linen Dress
The Ugly Dame
by Jennie

This was a project!! But it was so worth the effort! I present to you a two-piece linen dress with asymmetrical collar applique and trimming. To start off on this one, I saw this amazing brown linen from Burnley and Trowbridge and knew I would want to do something with it. When I was sorting through my patterns, I came to be conclusion that a two-piece dress was it. It was something that would have been new to me and also perfect for summer. It would also use up my brass tone buttons that have been sitting in my sewing drawer since last summer. I originally bought them for my Kilroy D ..read more

1940s Floral Sprigs
The Ugly Dame
by Jennie

I made this 1940s square necked dress last year over the winter. . . I was trying to beat the winter blues by sewing something I could look forward to wearing. I chose a pattern that I sitting in my pattern box for years (I could not even tell you how long I've have had it . . .yikes). Well, after all this time I made it up at last in a black background dainty floral. With the floral, I trimmed out the dress in a white cotton lace that was a part of my vintage mystery box from Emily's Vintage Visions. When I was making up the dress, I decided right away to put this trim on it because ..read more
