The story of the Eastman Kodak company involves also a black spot in 1914. On March 10, 1914, company Ansco was awarded $5 million damages from Eastman Kodak for infringing US 610,861 directed to a photographic pellicle and process of producing same. Mr. Hannibal Goodwin invented the protected method for making transparent, flexible roll film out of nitrocellulose film base, but the filed patent was only granted on September 13, 1898. In 1960, American jazz trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison and the Harry "Sweets" Edison Quintet released their album "Patented by Edison". While none of the album's tracks relates to Intellectual Property, the album cover shows a trumpet disassembled in its major components depicted as individual patent figures. (The cover art copyright is believed to belong to the label, Roulette Records, or the graphic artist(s)). Well, from an IP professional point of view there are a few issues with this album: The trumpet isn't an invention of Mr. Edison. Trumpet-like instruments are known since the ancien ..read more

In 2019, German singer Luzify released his album Obsidian on various streaming platforms. The album comprises among others a track named "Patent". The lyrics are a homage to the singer's wife or girl friend, and he compares her with a patent: Denn sie will meine Liebe Sie interessiert sich nicht für Geld Es gibt kein Streit nur Friede Diese Frau ist mein Patent or in English (sorry, doesn't rhyme): 'Cause she wants my love She doesn't care about money There is no argument only peace This woman is my patent Glad to see that patents are finally considered something positive :-) connected with ..read more

The Edison and Swan Electric Light Company Limited established in 1883 was the result of the avoidance of a costly dispute over violation of patent rights owned by Thomas Edison on the one hand side, and Joseph Swan on the other hand side. This interesting historical fact has been made the subject of Daniel Tedford's song Filament, released 2020 on his debut album EGOBOO. The lyrics refer to the Edison/Swan patent dispute as follows: Burning up the candle at both ends The patents filed, profits rolling in Behold! The truth unfolds that Edison's a fraud For he claimed the work of Swan as his o ..read more

In this post, I will speak about the Munich 2022 carnival season and my humble contribution. I am happy and proud to say that since 1990 the Munich official carnival society "Narrhalla" continuously uses my audio work product to support the royal dance performance. This year, due to the pandemic, the main show remains unperformed, but the royal couple took over the reign of Munich city last Friday. Their royal dance in front of the Munich City Hall was to the Waltz "I have nothing" by Whitney Houston. The lyrics are symptomatic of the times we are living in for two years, making us humble and ..read more

British band Uniform released their album Populous in 1998. The album contains a track called Knockout Mice. The lyrics elaborate on so-called knockout mice, i.e., mice genetically modified by order of the customer. Certain genes are turned off - knocked out; hence the name - and replaced or disrupted with an artificial piece of DNA. The so-modified mice are used in experiments and research. Engineer me until I'm cancer prone Splice me, price me I'm a patent waiting to happen, Algernon of the whole genome Inventions related to such genetic modifications can be subject to patent protection. Foetus is a solo musical project of Australian composer and producer James George Thirwell. Formed in 1981, Foetus' music can be described as Industrial or No-Wave while also incorporating orchestral elements. In his song Instead… I Became Anenome, to be found on his album Ache, Foetus incidentally comments on the non-obvious criteria of patent law: When is an indulgence not an indulgence? When it's a necessity There's no patent on the obvious, only on the seven deadly sins However, I would contradict that only matters referring to the seven deadly sins are open to patent protection! In my in ..read more
