I didn’t know that living in the desert was my dream. Now I can’t imagine being anywhere else. I crave the openness that is here. The air that smells like sage and the endlessly inspiring skies that change so quickly. But the most beautiful part of living in Nevada is the light. We moved here in August and I couldn’t believe the light. It’s so strong and bright. In the summer the sun abruptly rises at 5am. It isn’t a gradual warming of the day it is a sudden, glaring, get up for the day awakening. And I love it. For me, it is the best light to create in. Film, by nature, requires a stronger li ..read more

My First Studio Sessions
Sara Weir Photography

Studio Sessions were born, like most things for me, out of curiosity. It was winter 2020 and we were all very much cooped up due to weather and the ongoing pandemic. School had started again, but we were missing school pictures and some form of normalcy. So I pulled out my seamless backdrop and set up an in home session. I think I took all these images in about 10 minutes after church so that’s why they’re all semi-dressed up. I fell in love with all of it. It was easy, it was painless, and the results were so much better than the photos from the school. I don’t know about you but I laugh so h ..read more

A Personal Project

The moments are slipping through my fingers. I am craving the documentation of my own life. I stumble upon little images from the past. Today it was Durham, head newly shaven for summer, sitting on the porch of our last home. He looks so young, but it can’t be more than a year ago. I don’t typically feel this way. It must be the baby on the way. Normally I feel content being exactly where we are. I don’t scroll through past images remembering longingly for when they were small. I find them so enjoyable now. But with such a huge change on the horizen I desparately want images of them and me wi ..read more

Our Anniversaries

Our anniversaries pass us by more quickly each year. I’m in that stage of life where I age because I watch my children grow up. Not one for big celebrations or hallmark occasions, I often find myself letting them slip past me unnoticed. I was the first one to forget our anniversary. I believe it was our third anniversary. We were living abroad attending medical school in the Carribean. I woke up to a beautiful breakfast. Not an unusual occurance, but lovely none the less. We spent the morning together talking. I did take special notice of how sweet it was. It wasn’t until the afternoon when we ..read more

The Unfolding of a Family Session

I have interwoven these thoughts throughout many of my posts, but today I wanted to dedicate a single post to the process of a shoot. I think it will answer so many of the concerns and questions we all feel before being photographed. I view portraiture as an unfolding. In the beginning you and I meet together much like a first date. There are jitters and flutters of nerves as we both semi awkwardly dance around each other. We’re both trying to understand the other without much to go on. So we chat, asking questions, learning, observing until we both feel more comfortable. Then the camera comes ..read more

These are the Places and the People
Sara Weir Photography

There are times when nothing else will do except an escape into the desert with my camera and the people I love. Sometimes we drive into the hills laughing and singing as we’re jostled around. Other times we’re quiet with the windows down each discovering our own treasures. Life has felt heavy of late. I find myself wishing for more time to escape - not to skirt responsibilities but to be held in a world that feels quiet and still. To be, if only for a moment, absolutely present with the people I care for the most without the distractions of trying to constantly teach them life’s lessons. Thes ..read more

Hidden Locations

I found this field of flowers with my husband. We came upon it while following a jeeping trail through the mountains of Tahoe. It was one of those places you stumble upon and never forget. As a photographer the images in my heart do not always get realized. I used to mourn this fact, but now I realize these wishes find their way into my work in one form or another. That day of exploration with my family really only lives within my memory. I did not realize what it would mean to me and as such did not treat it with the loving documentation that I should have. The beauty is though, that I was ab ..read more

I began my professional photography journey as a wedding photographer. Well, I suppose I photographed friends and their families first, but I always knew I wanted to photograph weddings, so when I founded my business in earnest in 2016 it was with the intent to focus on wedding photography in Reno. And I loved it. Photographing weddings is always exciting. You get to wear so many hats. You’re a portrait photographer, a landscape photographer, a food stylist/photographer, it’s all the wonderful things about being a photographer wrapped into one. You’re always searching for that next shot and yo ..read more

Senior Film Portraits

Endings precede new beginnings. Always. Sometimes we recognize the endings like with high school graduations. Other times we tend to focus more on the beginnings like welcoming a new baby into a family. Either way, it is in these seasons of in-between that we seek ways to celebrate the accomplishment, be present in the moment, or even freeze it so we don’t lose or forget the highs we feel as enjoy to fruits of our labors. It’s a beautiful tension - one I love to capture beautifully through film photography. Why film photography? First, the quality of the results, but second for the process ..read more

Introducing Peonies I + II

shoppe COllection Available for the first time as a digital download and fine art print.  The peony flower represents love, romance, prosperity, and happiness in marriage. I fell in love with Valentines Day when my children were small and I got to share with them the magic that are conversation hearts. This year I wanted to print something for myself to celebrate the beautiful love that engulfs my life. When I remembered my peonies. Months ago, feeling low, I gathered Trader Joe's Peonies and photographed them for an entire day near my office window. It was a beautiful expression ..read more
