You Fashion Model You

Front Range Colorado women and men, I’m looking for YOU for a “fashion” shoot. Wearing your best clothes, bringing your best style. LA and NY, I will be in your city this summer. Got a hot car? Bring it. I have urban and suburban locations that are perfect for a photography session in Boulder and Denver. Who are we photographing this series for? For a modeling agency? Nope. For a magazine spread? Nope. For a runway talent scout? Nope. Who then? For YOU! To see how amazing you look when you get a little direction and are put in front of the right photographer who knows a bit about light and p ..read more

A Matter of Prestige (Not Only for Celebrities)

It used to be a big deal. (We were a big deal!) It was a special occasion. It was a time to get dressed up. It was a place to look our best. It was the photographer’s portrait studio. Not the JC Penney bargain-quality department store studio with the standard poses and fixed lighting for $9.99. Or Kmart’s. Or Sears. Nope, not those. The artistic portrait made by the photographer downtown in the big brick building with a north-facing skylight on the top floor. The one with the big lights and huge camera. The one with the fancy hand-painted muslin background. The photographer who also photograph ..read more

What’s Your Ratio of ‘Living’ vs ‘Preparing to Live’?

We’re either preparing to live or we’re living. We can’t be doing both at the same time. You’re either buying and peeling potatoes, or you’re eating them at a dinner party with friends. One is prep. One is living. You’re either pumping up the tires on your bike, or you’re soaring at 20mph under a canopy of trees on a country road. One is prep. One is living. Shopping is done to get the things that we need to live at a later time. I was driving to a store and was stopped at a red light. I saw a bicyclist ride past me as I waited for the light to change. I looked at him and thought, “That guy is ..read more

Easter Sunday Rolleiflex Portraits Day 3

I’ve had such a good time meeting people the past couple of days that I knew I had to go back out again today and see who I would find. Who I’d meet and strike up a conversation with. That’s the beautiful thing about a classic film camera, it’s a great ice breaker. This time from the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder on Easter Sunday. Another fun day walking around with the TLR and looking for people to approach. It takes a little bit of selling–“Hi, may I make your portrait?” “For what?” “For you, I want to make it for you.” (I will print and give them framed printed photographs to live with in th ..read more

Rolleiflex Day 2: Going Back for More

Yesterday’s street portrait walk with the Rolleiflex made me want to go out again today. And so I did. This time I loaded Ilford HP5 in a Rolleiflex 3.5F. First stop was in Longmont where I found this wonderful couple. Then I had to run an errand in Arvada Colorado to deliver a framed photograph, so I figured I’d use the rest of the roll there. Here’s who I found. This woman I approached and asked to make her portrait. The TLR is a great way to approach people because they’re enamored by the old fashioned-looking camera. Some people approached me. Like this woman. Her indication is clea ..read more

Rolling Around with a Rolleiflex

There’s something extra special about going out with just a single roll of Ilford HP5+ in a Rolleiflex–the possibilities abound regarding who I might meet, what I will see. This week I took a drive north toward Greeley Colorado with no real destination except perhaps one antique shop I like to frequent, only to find out it’s no longer in business. But all along the way I looked for photo subjects. And when you’re looking for things to photograph with a loaded camera in hand, you find things to photograph. Here are some of the photos from that roll inside a Rolleiflex 2.8C. These first tw ..read more

As Photography Has Become Ubiquitous, It’s Become Irrelevant (to the Masses)
6×6 Portraits

The era of film photography produced some seriously good photographers. Photographers whose work hangs in museums and galleries and is revered for its quality. Robert Frank, Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Helen Levitt, Diane Arbus. Even recent discoveries like Vivian Maier’s work are celebrated. Because it’s of a quality that we can appreciate. Perhaps because we don’t see it as much nowadays. Since the advent of digital photography, specifically phone cameras, it’s my contention that photography has been lessened in importance as it’s been relegated to a pastime of the masses, and when ..read more

Tuesday Night Photographers Gather

For the past two years, I and a group of local photographers have been gathering at a Colorado Irish pub on Tuesday nights. If you stop into Mike O’Shays in Longmont, Colorado on any Tuesday evening, you’ll find a gang of photo enthusiasts from amateur snapshooters to seasoned pros sitting around, drinking Guinness pints or other drinks, getting wings, cheeseburgers or shepherds pie and showing a bit of work via prints, ipad or laptop. It all started in March 2022 when I went to the pub to write. I often write comedy, fiction, screenplays and these blog posts in public settings. It gets me out ..read more

A Trio of Photographs of a Longtime Friend
6×6 Portraits

Some friendships last over multiple decades and across long miles. My former photo editor, Martin, who hired me on as a staff photographer at The Times of Trenton (NJ), is one of those friendships. I’ve seen him when I’m back on the east coast and he’s visited with me when he’s out in Colorado skiing. So, this week, when he posted a photo with a “Welcome to Colorado” sign, my first message to him was, “Where are we meeting for a drink?” We made lunch plans for next day meeting at my favorite saloon in town. He was traveling with his friend Bob, who I’ve also known for decades. After lunch, I s ..read more
