What a stark difference a few weeks makes, the March photowalk was almost a washout but two weeks later with the same camera and film combo, we get this, most of the 2024 Winter Stations at Woodbine Beach, and an Easter parade. Couldn't ask for a nicer Easter Sunday. Camera: Nikon FM2n, Nikkor Ais 50 F1.4 lens.  Film: Fomapan 400, Ilfotec HC 1+31.  ..read more

ORWO NP100 in Oakville

I was gifted a roll of ORWO NP 100 about six months ago, and I can't remember from who to save my life. I've usually just shot UN54 an 100 ISO motion picture stock that was sold in 100'/30M bulk rolls and I would decant down into 36 exposure cassesttes, I also have some colour NC 500 I want to try at some point, NP100 is the still photography cousin to UN54. Spring in Oakville is stort of arriving in fits and starts, I got out on one nice afternoon for a walk around the immediate neighbourhood, haven't done that in ages and the rest of the roll was shot downtown Oakville on a less than w ..read more

After the Walk, a Wander Through King West and Spadina

After the St Patricks themed photowalk with Toronto Photowalks, I loaded the F100 with some Bergger Pancro 400 to change things up a bit after two rolls of Cinestill 400, and was pleased with the results. I've shot a fair bit of Pancro 400, sadly rather thin on the ground in these parts post pandemic. The last 20 rolls was purchased through Fotoimpex in Berlin Germany and shipped here during pandemic times. BH Photo still has it as out of stock.  What I like about Pancro 400 is the character, this time around the grain is a lot tighter, and I wonder if it's the perfect exposure cour ..read more

The second roll scanned better than the first roll from this. I love what I got inside The Well this time around and the Tulips on Portland photo just sings. Jo-Anne did this walk with Toronto Photowalks and I plan to do a variation of this route for the Toronto Film Shooters at a later date, when the temperature is a bit more, later spring if you catch my drift.  Camera: Nikon F100, Nikon AF-D lenses.  Film: Cinestill 400 D, ECN-2 processed through Graination Lab.  ..read more

Gotta love Vuescan and their frequant updates. They did another one just before I scanned this roll and for some odd reason I had re learn scanning Cinestill 400 D. Don't ask why, just is. I had to get my sea legs back scanning this particular film. Things got better the further I got through the roll.  Nikon F100, Nikon AF-D lenses  Film: Cinestill 400D, ECN-2 Processed at Graination Lab.  ..read more

You know, best laid plans and all, I had this great photo walk planned for the Beaches to take in the Winter Stations,  but we only got to see one. Conrad, aka Robo Trash Panda in Ivan Forest Gardens. The weather forecast turned evil with one long epic rain event. The blob of green stretched from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico on the Weather Network radar.  We still went out, it was a light drizzle, I briefed everyone, if the heavens open up, make a beeline for the Stone Lion for lunch. In the end I still hold photo walks in even less than ideal weather because sometime ..read more

Doomo Meter D on my Nikon S2.

There have been an explosion of clip on light meters of late, (Cosina) Voigtlander had their VC meter which fits into just about any hot or cold shoe on SLRs and range finder cameras and medium format rigs. Fast forward to recent times, companies like Reveni Labs, Keks and others have come out with their idea for the clip on light meter. I owned an early Reveni Labs meter, while accurate, it really didn't gel with me, and has been sitting in a drawer ever since. I did a ton of reading and settled on the Doomo Meter D and purchased it through Downtown Camera along with some ORWO NC4 ..read more

Nikon F100, Lomo 400 C-41 and False Spring.

You could make an argument that this past winter was one big long false spring for before winter sort of appeared for a week or so in late March. It was a glorious Friday afternoon and I wanted to play with the second Nikon F100 I bought recently from Burlington Camera, I kitted it out with the battery grip and the F100 became even more perfect in my hands.  With colour matrix metering shooting colour film with the F100 is like getting cheat codes for a video game. I was amazed with the end results from Lomo 400 C-41, don't know if it expired or not, but wow the colours were pretty much s ..read more

Canon EF, the Fly Below the Radar FD Body

I gotta stay away from the used counter at Burlington Camera (famous last words). This makes my second EF in my tool shed, and  works better than my first one. The Canon EF was a test bed for new technology, featuring a vertical copal shutter, something Canon would not adapt into the autofocus era, that was hybrid mechanical/electronic being evey shutter speed was mechanical above one second and everything slower was electroncially controlled, and was shutter priority. The EF fell between the F-1 and FTb in the product line up and was geared to well healed advanced amateurs who lov ..read more

Frugal Film Roll for March, a Wander Around Midtown Toronto and Davisville Village

It was a lovely March 1 Friday Afternoon and the perfect time for a solo photo walk. I used a roll of Fomapan 400 I decented from my bulk roll, and learned with light strikes on three frames towards the end, it was time to retire this reusable film cannister. I'm partial to the old metal Kalt cannisters which are no longer available. I still have a stash that by and large works but I'm auditioning some new reusable plastic film cannisters from FlicFilm which they currently use for their rolls of Eastman Double X. I have no idea what the lifespan is on these, we'll find out.  Camer ..read more
