Crouch Paddle April ’24
Maldon Canoe Club

As the weekend approached all eyes were on the weather forecast, was the wind ever doing to drop? we certainly hoped so.  We knew the section of the Crouch from Woodham to Battlesbridge was fairly sheltered so weren’t too concerned and the wind just dropped enough for the paddle to proceed.  A day of discovery was in store, new boats on the water for the first time,  people in sea kayaks for the first time, some people wondering if they can still fit in their sea kayak.   We obtained permission for South Woodham Ferrers Yacht Club for the use of their facilities in exchan ..read more

Maldon Canoe Club

Wednesday 17th April saw 14 paddlers meet at Tesco for the first of our regular Wednesday night paddles of 2024.  Of the 14 paddlers we had 5 coaches on the water, 4 new paddlers experiencing their first time paddling away from the warmth of a swimming pool and some regulars returning.   It was certainly nice to get back on the river, it is a great way to unwind after a day at work. We had a nice gentle paddle to start off the week heading down towards Heybridge basin before returning back to Tesco. The weather stayed dry for us whilst we paddled, but the rain shower did arrive ..read more

Chelmer starts off 2024

The River Chelmer was the venue for the first club paddle of the year.   So far the weather has not been on our side, either too much rain or too much wind, but today eight of us ventured out onto the Chelmer for a one way float from Papermill Lock to Beeleigh with the rapid current. After shuttling, or shuffling some cars we all set off from Papermill on a chilly Sunday morning.   The river was high following the rain of the previous couple of days, this certainly made the portages easier, no big climbs to get in or out of boats. The first lock we arrived at was Rushes ..read more

The club has achieved #Shepaddles accreditation as part of our equality policy. There are a number of policies from British canoeing which are in line with our clubs fair policies where all are welcome and all treated equally. Canoeing has always had low numbers of female paddlers not sure why? All canoe clubs I have been in have always treated all members fairly and Maldon Canoe Club are committed to this, as now proved by this accreditation assessment. What we are doing is, monitoring photos ensuring there is no lack of recognition and a fair proportion of all groups of paddlers are shown. M ..read more

The additional sessions over the winter season proved popular with a number of members using these evenings to learn and improve their skills including rolling. Paddle Trips We had and have a lot of trips planned this year, using venues on the Medway, River Stour, and Chelmer. There were several sea paddles on the River Orwell, B ..read more

Maldon Canoe Club

Maldon canoe club are proud to announce we have been awarded quality club status by British Canoeing . This has been something as Chairman I considered a useful exercise for the club which puts us in a  stronger position to obtain grants having now effectively been  audited by British canoeing. Our systems of work and procedures have been an area we worked on extensively since we had to  re launch of the club in 2019. Since that time British Canoeing have also updated procedures and recommendations, this means we are one of the few clubs in line with all the latest procedures ..read more

We left Heybridge Basin around 10am on a beautifully sunny crisp and a little chilly January morning, Perfect conditions for a sea paddle. We head off against tide, south towards Osea to have brunch on the Beach East side of the Island. The journey was pact with wildlife, Numerous Breeds of wild foul to a curious Seal watching us eat on the beach. We continue our journey around the southern part of Osea now with tide, heading west for the south side of Northey. Using the compass and buoys as markers we hit Northey just where we wanted, which just seemed to blend in with the background and was ..read more

Hi All Equipment advice sea kayaks We have been asked about what types of kayaks we recommend so I thought I would put some advice together for the club. Starting with sea kayaks Plastic is cheaper and can take more punishment brands like P&H, Valley, perception and north shore are about the best. If buying new it’s worth shopping around members have picked up a number of bargains, we also get discounts from nucleus canoes which is always a good starting point. Ebay and gumtree do have good boats for sale. Local waters Blackwater, Crouch, Thames, mean we have to do longer distances to get ..read more

Update on MCC new coaches and leaders
Maldon Canoe Club
by maldoncanoeclub_6we6fs

It’s been a busy year for some of our aspirant paddlers, who have been working towards British Canoeing Coaching and Leadership qualifications. This is a fantastic achievement for not only themselves but also the club as it elevates our club to be bigger and better in what we can offer to our members. Why does the Club need Leaders and Coaches? Maldon Canoe Club support all members who wish to progress their paddling skills and qualifications because without them, the club would be very limited in where and what we can paddle. So by having a strong team of qualified paddlers across a wide s ..read more
