I’ve written about self-care a few times, and I anticipate this won’t be the last (“God willing and the crick don’t rise”). For some, the term “self-care” comes across as cliché or “soft,” but for those of us in pursuit, the concept, and more importantly, the benefits of practice, are not. Prioritizing my needs and well-being (and yes, wants) are practices I’ve slowly become more comfortable with over the past decade. Triggered by the start of perimenopause at 43, fueled by COVID-19 at 47, compounded by the murder of George Floyd (where we all witnessed that neither my Black son’s l ..read more

What comes to mind when you hear “menopause doula”? It’s an intriguing concept for sure, and one that women navigating menopause transition increasingly want to learn more about.  Because only 20% of Ob-Gyn residents in the US have received formal menopause training while in medical school, it stands to reason that many women may need to seek alternative forms of help — such as a menopause coach or a menopause doula — to help manage their menopause transition. That’s where certified health coach and menopause doula-in-training Dana Lawson comes in. Coaching women through a healthier menop ..read more

MENOPAUSE, SPRING & TRANSITIONS

I recently read somewhere that springtime is a time of renewal and regeneration. While this isn’t how we often think about menopause transition, on my best days, I can see the correlation. Like the transition from winter to spring, I’ve definitely been “renewed” in  different ways throughout my perimenopausal journey. Mostly, I’ve developed a renewed sense of self. I’ve become much clearer on what’s important to me and what’s not — what I’m willing to tolerate and what I’m not. How to walk away from what no longer serves me and most important, how to pursue with a focused determinati ..read more

Dr. Val Cacho (a.k.a. Dr. Val) knows the critical role sleep plays during menopause transition. A board-certified internal and sleep medicine doctor, she started her sleep consulting practice, Sleephoria, in 2021 after seeing an increase in menopausal women struggling with sleep coming to her clinical practice. “As women, our hormones can affect everything such as our mood, energy levels, and yes, even our sleep; but what I want women to know is that there are ways to improve this.”  What began as a mere passion project of time for Dr. Val has grown into an online educational program ..read more
