Back in 1998, American Gerontologist, John Rowe and Academic, Robert Kahn, wrote a paper called ‘Successful Ageing’. I remember reading it one day during my studies. Sitting in the University library feeling overweight, exhausted and probably, at the time, rubbing my knees, nothing about my ageing felt ‘successful’ at all. However the paper, gave me hope. It provided a summary of one of the very first studies on the health of older people in America, looking at dimensions of ‘successful’ ageing. Whilst criticisms of it’s narrowed perspective ultimately arrived in academic circles, it served ..read more

When you’re plodding the hallway at 2am feeling exhausted and despairing and you know you’ve got a busy day ahead of you, I bet you haven’t given your liver a thought have you? However, you need to. Your liver has its own circadian clock and if your liver is a bit unhealthy (and whose isn’t after 40-50 years of living in a modern society?) then this may be affecting the quality and duration of your sleep. Whilst you won’t actually know if your liver is ‘unhealthy’ or not until you have liver function tests done, you may have heard of a liver condition called Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease ..read more

The MyMT™ KITCHEN: Stalks of Protection for your Liver with Mushroom and Celery Soup

Celery is an acquired taste isn’t it? Some of my family still don’t like the taste nor the crunch of it, but when I make this soup, they don’t know that there is even celery in it. Little do they know how good it is for them. Whilst some of you may also be sensitive to celery, because it produces its own pesticides to protect it from fungi, if you wash the stalks thoroughly, then this should reduce your sensitivity.  The potassium and sodium in celery juice helps to regulate body fluid and stimulate urine production. This makes it an important vegetable to include in your diet, especial ..read more

It was 1983. There I was sitting in a beautiful restaurant atop a hill high above the Mediterranean city of Cannes in the south of France. As a young nurse, I was with two other ‘Kiwi’ nurses and we were looking after an elderly English man, who needed 24 hr care. He was meeting his daughter at the restaurant and as his care-givers, we were invited along. When I went to order in my halting French, the waiter assured me that being from New Zealand, I might like to try the local fish. It had been caught that morning by his son. Same day ocean to plate.  The meal was so memorable that over ..read more

Many of us know that depression and anxiety are major mental health problems in all parts of the world, including for women in their menopause transition. These illnesses are associated with a number of risk factors, including oxidative stress and inflammation. Mental health challenges are so ubiquitous that even the World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that by 2030, depression, as a potentially fatal disease, will be the second leading cause of disability worldwide. (Friedrich, 2017). For midlife women, it’s not only depression that may be challenging, but also anxiety. Most of us know ..read more

I could see her struggling to walk along the hospital corridor. There we were in the Emergency Room unexpectedly – it was busy and there were a few middle-age nurses helping the never-ending stream of patients coming in the door – hubbie included. Noticing her discomfort and limping movement, I was drawn to look at her ankles. They were swollen. I wondered if she understood how her fluid-balance was affected by both oestrogen and progesterone changes in menopause. Being on her feet for hours as patients came and went was probably not helping her legs either. Memories of my own swollen, achin ..read more

It’s a hard word to roll around your tongue, but Diindolylmethane or DIM, is the compound in cruciferous vegetables that makes experts advise people at risk for breast cancer to eat more cabbage and broccoli as a preventive measure.  This important compound makes broccoli the Queen of the Crucifers, as it has an impact on the metabolism of oestrogens that linger in the liver and gut. So, a shout-out to the Blue Zones team for this delicious Creamy Broccoli-Peanut Soup this week. If you are allergic to peanut butter and peanuts then try it with cashew nut butter instead. I’m sure it will ..read more

It’s amazing to think that Type 2 diabetes and obesity was rare in our parent’s generation. But today, in many western countries, it is the fasting growing chronic condition – especially in women aged 50 – 59 years. In Australia alone, 280 Australians develop diabetes every day (Diabetes Australia). That’s one person every 5 minutes. The growth, according to researchers, is increasing at a faster rate than other chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer. As Practitioner’s working with midlife women, keeping up to date with research can be challenging. Overweight and obesity research ..read more

New Research: Do Clinicians and Exercise and Health Professionals need to collaborate to change the exercise habits of women in menopause?

‘Adopting healthy behaviors implies a multitude of challenges for individuals and unfortunately, medical advice and prescriptions do not guarantee lifestyle changes,’ mentions new research out of Spain, calling for a greater alliance between Clinicians and Health Professionals, especially when it comes to women’s exercise in the menopause transition and of course, exercise adherence. [Godoy-Izquierdo et al., 2024]. It’s an interesting perspective – a challenge for greater efforts to be made for collaboration between medical practitioners working with menopausal women and sport and exercise e ..read more
