The season is off to a start in Europe with the Cottbus World Cup, scheduled for 24th-27th February. Over a hundred gymnasts are registered for the event, including Olympic MAG floor champion Artem Dolgopyat and 2021 Worlds balance beam silver medallist Pauline Schaefer-Betz. The Doha World Cup takes place on 2nd-5th March, with a considerable number of European gymnasts on the roster, such as Russia’s Viktoriia Listunova and Ireland’s Rhys McClenaghan. Tony Retrosi is a gymnastics coach from the USA who owns two gymnastics clubs and runs the consulting company Gym Momentum. Having spent some time in Italy as a consultant with the Italian gymnastics federation, Tony was offered an interim role coaching the Swiss national WAG team following the dismissal of the previous coaching staff in September 2021. A relative newcomer to major senior international competition, 23-year-old Noe Seifert was selected for Worlds in Kitakyushu this year and just a few weeks later, made his debut at the Swiss Cup alongside Lena Bickel. With the retirement of Switzerland’s four top gymnasts, Pablo Braegger, Oliver Hegi, Giulia Steingruber and Ilaria Kaeslin, there was an opportunity for four other gymnasts to compete at the Swiss Cup for the first time. Team Switzerland 2 consisted of 23-year-old Noe Seifert and 16-year-old Lena Bickel. American gymnast Yul Moldauer has had a very busy 2021, competing at the the Olympic Games in Tokyo as well as Worlds in Kitakyushu. He won the Arthur Gander Memorial competition in Morges on 3rd November, ahead of Nikita Nagornyy and Illia Kovtun, and was on track for a podium finish at the Swiss Cup Zürich on 7th November. This weekend saw all the WAG finals for the Mersin Challenge Cup take place on Sunday 12th September. With a relatively small number of gymnasts taking part in qualifications, we had a mix of familiar faces on the World Cup circuit and some first and second year seniors with little competition experience vying for the medals. American gymnast Jade Carey has had an incredibly successful couple of years since her elite debut and added to her list of achievements at this month’s Swiss Cup event, where she won the gold medal alongside teammate Allan Bower. Swiss gymnast Giulia Steingruber finished in third place at the Swiss Cup yesterday afternoon, along with her teammate Oliver Hegi. Following a serious injury to her left knee in July 2018, which required surgery to repair the ACL and meniscus, Giulia made her comeback at Swiss nationals this September and has been going from strength to strength ever since. These World Championships were long anticipated by many because it was the last opportunity for federations to qualify entire teams to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Having qualified at the 2018 World Championships in Doha, three teams already had their Olympic team spots secured – the United States of America, China and Russia. 14 months after tearing the ACL and meniscus in her left knee at a friendly meet in France, Giulia Steingruber made her official comeback last weekend at Swiss nationals in Romont. In front of a packed sports hall crammed with family, friends and gymnastics fans, she gave a solid performance which resulted in a respectable all around score of 53.100, with one fall on uneven bars.
