Team
It should come as no shock to anyone that the likely scenario for this World Championships is a battle for gold between Japan and China, followed by a battle for bronze between Great Britain and USA. I’ve written a couple of articles going more in depth on these, looking at who has the difficulty advantages and scoring potential based on what we’ve seen this year:
Japan vs China
GB vs USA
GB vs Japan
But of course these aren’t the only teams in the conversation, and the rest of them are going to be having an intense battle to get into that team final and even possibly crack that top 4 ..read more

Worlds is now right around the corner, and once again we are faced with a looming showdown between Japan and China for the team title. I think it’s going to be super exciting, because both teams are facing some challenges going into this Worlds. Japan’s team is nothing like the one we would’ve expected to see at the start of the year, with 50% of their Olympic team not getting through the rigorous selection procedures that Japan always use (although Kaya Kazuma is in Liverpool as the alternate). Despite being 80% the same team as the one that took bronze at 2019 Worlds (with Kazuma’s spot fill ..read more

World Championships is now rights around the corner, and with Japan and China expected to be battling it out for the gold and silver medals in the team event, the big question is who is the favourite for bronze? Since 2016, USA and GB have been going back and forth in the 4th and 5th place spots, but this year presents an excellent opportunity for one of them to grab a medal.
With the GB team being identical to the one that won gold at Commonwealth Games and Euros earlier this year, we are already quite familiar with how they’re constructing their lineups and what we can expect to see on each ..read more

Following on from Great Britain’s hugely successful and impressive performance at 2022 Euros, plus the same team’s dominance representing England at the Commonwealth Games, I’ve had a lot of questions and comment about how they would stack up against the other top teams in the World. Since Japan are the only team to have named their Worlds team so far, they’re the only team I can use for comparison purposes here, though I do plan to compare all of the (expected) top 4 teams (Japan, China, USA and GB) once their teams have been named. Of course, GB haven’t named their team yet, but it seems ver ..read more

It’s hard to know how to approach a discussion about this AA competition because the favourite on paper, Joe Fraser, is a bit of a questionmark. Joe only competed 4 events at Commonwealth Games a couple of weeks ago due to a fractured foot, however is down on the startlist to compete all 6 events at Euros- but he is up last on both floor and vault so they don’t have to use him if the first three up do well. I suspect he will want to try for an AA medal anyway, and his difficulty and scoring potential is the highest in the field here, it’s just hard to know what he will look like on ..read more

The heavy favourites for the team title at this Euros are Great Britain– the team is identical to the English team that won Commonwealth Games a couple of weeks ago with a strong team score of 254.550. For context, this is just over a point lower than the score that the GB Olympic team got to place 4th in Tokyo. The notable thing about that score is that there were no significant mistakes in that performance. Of course coming off the big high of those Games and with team members carrying a couple of injuries (James Hall suffered and ankle injury during the Commonwealth AA final, and Joe Fraser ..read more

Team
The English team of James Hall, Joe Fraser, Courtney Tulloch, Giarnni Regini-Moran and Jake Jarman, is the far and away favourite for the team gold this Commonwealth Games. Not only are they the favourites, but they are expected to win by a huge margin- in 2018 the gap between gold medal winning England and silver medal winning Canada was over 10 points. This is pretty much to be expected- this England team consists of GB’s top gymnasts, a team which has solidified itself in the top 5 teams in the World and is expected to challenge for a team medal at the World Championships this October ..read more

It’s that time of year again… the time where we desperately try to figure out what on earth is going on in Japan. And this year it’s even more chaotic than usual, somehow.
First things first- World Championships Selection policy. As we know, Japan’s teams are not so much selected as decided via complicated spreadsheet algorithm. This year with a 5 person team, the process is this:
Hashimoto Daiki is already named to the team due to being the 2021 Olympic AA Champion.
Spots 2 and 3 are automatically granted to the top 2 non-Daiki AA finishers at the NHK Trophy (15th May), which combines the sc ..read more

The official rosters for the Russian National team for 2022 have been released, and there has been many changes from the 2021 National Team list- more than usual. As always, the Russian National team consists of a main team and a reserve team, and it is possible for the teams to be updated throughout the year.
New additions and changes are in bold. I’ve also included birth years for all the gymnasts this time because many new/recent additions to the main team are younger and less well known gymnasts.
