Child sacrifice, kicking the chair, and forming digital detox community The Stage Coach by Johnathan Eastman Johnson, 1871 Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Matthew 18, 6 The original image I had in mind for this post was stark and disturbing, something along the lines of monsters eating children. But that is not what moves people. Hope moves. The painting above by Johnathan Eastman Johnson was created out of the depth of despair that industria ..read more

How ‘critical thinking’ and outsourcing of memory are withering culture, and how to turn the tide ‘The disintegration of the Persistence of Memory’ by Salvador Dali …this discovery of yours will create forgetfulness in the learners’ souls, because they will not use their memories; they will trust to the external written characters and not remember of themselves. The specific which you have discovered is an aid not to memory, but to reminiscence, and you give your disciples not truth, but only the semblance of truth; they will be hearers of many things and will have learned nothing; they will ..read more

The Sower by Vincent van Gogh When asked why students today should still learn Shakespeare, the AI language processing tool ChatGPT snips back promptly: “Shakespeare’s works are still relevant today because they explore universal themes such as love, jealousy, ambition, and power that are timeless and applicable to contemporary society. Learning Shakespeare helps to develop critical thinking and language skills, as well as a deeper understanding of the English language and its evolution.” There it is. Even what could be the fastest growing app in history renders a clear argument for Shakespear ..read more

Time to crack open Bradbury’s classic again… A California teacher made it onto the woke watch list with this TikTok post. Don’t feel the need to watch it; she identifies as ‘cringey’ and the title of this article sums up the rest. In short she suggests that we should focus on ‘honoring the spoken word’ and get rid of the ‘language of power’, which according to her include thesis statements, citing sources, and using transition words. She does her best to undermine such ‘b.s.’ because writing conventions are ‘made up rules’. Therefore (ouch, she would cringe at this word), rather than teaching ..read more

TikTok Brain Cure with Three Ingredients

Channelling Holden Caulfield, my daughter designed this logo about five years ago, frustrated with friends who kept staring at their screens during conversations. She had a t-shirt and a tote bag to go along with it. It garnered some agreeable nods, but phones still kept winning over an actual face. TikTok had not even entered the stage yet. ‘Don’t be a phoney’ actually does contain the most simple ingredients to the TikTok cure: get off your phone and get real. But we know it’s much more complicated. In our family we went from methods of abstinence, to strict rules, to (flawed) self- control ..read more

TikTok – Time is running out for saving our children’s brains

Illustration by Nyomi Fox Our children’s brains are currently being sacrificed on the altar of TikTok in exchange for snippy videos on ‘How to peel a banana’ (over 250 million views) or ‘Lip syncing in front of a bathroom mirror'(over 600 million views). These seemingly benign, mildly amusing, mostly navel-gazing shorts have been dubbed ‘digital fentanyl’ and have prompted even mainstream media to take note with articles such as: Broken classrooms: Why teachers and parents don’t stand a chance, ‘TikTok Brain’ is killing students’ ability to learn, or TikTok Brain Explained: Why Some Kids Seem ..read more

Family Traditions: Why baking cookies, snowy walks, and read-alouds matter

One of our favourite family traditions is A Christmas Carol read-aloud Christmas time is when most families follow some type of tradition. However, ‘traditions’ are increasingly portrayed with skepticism by the mainstream media. The nuclear family is often portrayed simply as a ‘campaign of indoctrination by big business and religious conservatives’ and any sociology textbook will describe the traditional family as merely an ‘idealized concept’. Yet family is at the core of positive educational outcomes, the formation of a strong sense of identity, and the building of character. Family traditi ..read more
