Riccardo Rossi dubs the lead character of a Black Beach, a film recently released on Netflix. “A two-sided film, which starts off in a given way, then begins to change into something else halfway through”.
If you read the review, you’ll probably get the impression that working on such a film must have been extremely challenging, but Riccardo immediately points out that «sure, compare to the actor, a dubber must prepare less for the role and he must focus more on the extemporaneous aspect. But in dubbing, a whole lot of work is done before the recording session begins: translation, script adap ..read more

In Firefly Lane, the series that premiered on Netflix on 3 February, Katherine Heigl plays Tully, a multifaceted character. Illustrious dubber Barbara De Bortoli tells us more about her: «ever since I started dubbing her, even before Grey’s Anatomy, she has evolved, as an actress. She has obviously matured as a woman, she has experienced motherhood. She has changed so much that she almost interrupted her collaboration with the cast of Grey’s Anatomy and with Shonda Rhimes, owing to the fact that she wanted to try something new. She also appeared in feature films, in comedies and set up her own ..read more

In the dystopic war movie Outside the wire, released by Netflix on 15 January, Federico Viola dubs Damon Idris, who portrays Lt. Harp, who must deal with Capt. Leo, a cyborg. Or better, a robot.
Viola is particularly keen on specifying this, seen as – aside from being a passionate dubber – he is also a sci-fi enthusiast. «Dubbing has always fascinated me, ever since I was 11 or 12, when I was really into videogames. That’s when I started noticing the voices involved. I remember this videogame I used to play a lot, Splinter Cell. I read on the back cover that Luca Ward dubbed the lead characte ..read more

He appeared in Suburra, Netflix’s first Italian-language original television series and he is now one of the Italian dubbers of Bridgerton, Netflix’s first Shondaland production: Jacopo Venturiero is a sort of recordman, but he prefers to brush aside such a definition…
We had a chat with him to get to know more about his work.
by Francesco Ormando
«Being an actor and being a dubber are two completely different jobs, with their own peculiarities and timeframes. The auditions, the studying and the shooting of two seasons of Suburra soaked up two whole years, while a dubbing job can be completed ..read more

«Italy’s dubbing school has a long, serious tradition. We are one of the reasons why our cinema is so renowned and duly acknowledged around the world. It has always been said that our dubbing style is unique. We used to work a lot with films to be released in cinema theatres, but now plenty of work is shifting towards TV products. Film-making is changing, as well as economic parameters and timeframes. We must acknowledge that we are witnessing a big change, but we cannot take in too much work if it ends up being detrimental to the quality of our work.» That’s a short excerpt of the interesting ..read more

Now that the United States has a new president, it is high time to go back to the Trial of the Chicago 7, the latest film directed by Aaron Sorkin (screenwriter of the highly praised serial political drama The West Wing, among others), released in cinemas first and then on Netflix.
The so-called “Chicago Seven” were tried following a number of incidents in August 1968, but the trial soon turned out to be vitiated. The film reconstructs, on the basis of the trial documents, what happened in court. But Sorkin immediately turns it into a metaphor that sounds like a reprimand of police violence ..read more

Emiliano Contorti dubs Jim Parsons, one of the lead characters of The Boys in the Band, Netflix’s new film, produced by Ryan Murphy. We asked him to tell us more about the film (directed by Joe Mantello), starting from the aspect that stands out straight away: since the film is about gay stories, the actors are all gay too. A sort of move against cultural appropriation, as if it were a quota-related matter.
«As an actor, as a child-adult who spends his life playing and uses his fantasy, hence uses something that – by definition – is limitless, I believe it makes little sense to say “the chara ..read more

Claudia Catani is the Italian dubbing director of The Barrier – the TV series that is now debuting on Netflix – and she also dubs Alma, one of the lead characters. Who better than her can tell us more about this new Spanish series?
«This series is exceptionally in synch with the times we are going through. It is set in Spain, roughly in 2040. Following a world war and a pandemic, the country decides to adopt a police state. Angela Molina is a very interesting character: she is a simple woman, who shows exactly who she is. Alma – the character I dub – is a peculiar figure. She is portrayed by a ..read more
