Have you fallen in love with your soul? Do you treat yourself kindly? Or maybe the relationship you have with yourself is complicated. You may be able to ramble on about all the things you *think* are wrong with you. But instead, consider what’s right. Open your eyes to the beauty within. Recognise your inner wisdom and infinite potential. See your creativity, compassion, strength. Embrace yourself fully, accepting your beautiful, radiant facets as well as those that might seem flawed – they’re part of the enchanting package that makes you, distinctly you. Accepting your own divinity can m ..read more

Do you count your blessings or your disappointments?
JOY Yoga
by Jessica Banks

With Christmas approaching and Thanksgiving just passed, it’s a time for gratitude, to reflect on life's bounty. But counting blessings shouldn't be allocated to one day or during a period of time, it should be a daily practice. You can count your blessings or you can count your misfortunes. One practice can inspire you, bringing awareness to all the gifts that surround you and all the opportunities that await. The other can send you into a downward spiral of frustration and disappointment. Despite the chaos of the times, there's a lot to be thankful for. If you struggle to see opportunities ..read more

Let go to live fully
JOY Yoga

Have you contemplated the concept of letting go? Our biggest experience of letting go is when we let go of the breath on an exhale to make way for an inhale. In yoga, when you let go of tension, you go deeper into a posture and can hold it longer. But the art of letting go can also apply to people, places, and things as well as points of view and emotions.  When something no longer serves you, hanging onto it can hold you back. When you get stuck on what could’ve-would’ve-should’ve happened, you lose grip on the here and now. Holding onto emotions keeps you from being fully present. (To ..read more

A MANTRA OF SELF-EMPOWERMENT
JOY Yoga
by Jessica Banks

There’s a saying you might have heard that’s popular among yoga practitioners: you wanna make God laugh? Make plans. The most certain thing in life is uncertainty. Most things that happen are beyond your control. The thought of not being in control can seem disempowering. However, learning to let go can be liberating. Trying to control everything can create friction. For all involved, the experience can spiral into disappointment and frustration. When you stop trying to wrestle with everything, you can relax and enjoy a state of ease.   Surrendering to the flow of life, you have ..read more

Balancing Breath
JOY Yoga

The breath is the most vital force of the body as it affects the activities of every cell in the body and is closely linked to the performance of the brain. A great way to balance ourselves out is by practicing a simple yet powerful breathing technique called Alternate Nostril Breathing - one of many types of pranayam. Here’s how to practice this simple breathing technique: Sitting comfortably, use the thumb and index fingers of your right hand (or left, if that’s more comfortable!) to breathe through alternate nostrils. First close the left nostril with your index fingers, inhaling deeply th ..read more

The other day, a couple issues set me on the defensive. First, a washroom hygiene service provider who hasn’t provided any service in more than a year made a second attempt to renew our contract for another year. The company was giving us various options of “we’ll be taking more of your money now even though we’re not doing anything to earn it.” My objections were being ignored. Second, I uncovered a “stolen” JOY image used in a defamatory Tik Tok post about another teacher and her studio. The teacher in question may not be your cup of tea but the six-video rant seemed unnecessary. What ..read more

The Journey of Meditation
JOY Yoga

Are you perfectly serene in meditations? Or are you like the rest of us, finding your mind and mood bouncing around? It’s a rare occurrence to sit down and ta-daaaaa, you’re there, blissed out with your own clarity, basking in your own sense of completeness. Most of us have lots of subconscious garbage to clear out before we get there. As you go through each meditation, it’s normal for your mind to wander. Left unchecked, your mind will bounce around from thought to thought, chasing every squirrel in your mind’s eye. As your mind wanders, so does your experience. You may hav ..read more

Developing Mental ‘Fitness’
JOY Yoga

Keeping fit physically is essential to keeping healthy. But mental fitness is vital too.  You can develop your mental fitness through Kundalini Yoga as much of the battle in it is mental. You may feel some discomfort during a challenging physical exercise, but – with the exceptions of illness or injury* – the battle isn’t usually with the physical body, it’s with the mind. Sure, you may need to make some physical adjustments. When you’re in better alignment, the exercise might flow more easily. But once the mind starts whining – and worse, you start listening – you’re in trouble ..read more

The Art of Letting Go
JOY Yoga

Recently I moved. A short-distance move, just a 20-minute walk from where I’ve been living the past 5 years. As I unpacked boxes that had been hidden in storage since I arrived in the UK five years ago, I discovered a number of material things that I should have let go a long time ago. Among these questionable treasures: a dented metal tin with an incomplete set of Caran d’Ache pencils. Just half of the original 18 pencils remain and those are worn down or broken to half their original height, all a bit grubby. My mum got the pencils when we lived in London when I was 5 years old. The pencils ..read more

Nam Nishan Singh's journey with yoga and meditation began in 2009 alongside his performing career as an actor in New York City. Overwhelmed by the emotions that came along with constant auditioning and dealing with rejection, he searched for a way out of the negative self-talk and feelings of disconnection. A friend and Kundalini Yoga instructor introduced him to the practice and he was immediately hooked. This was a way of physically confronting unwanted emotions in a safe environment that lead to noticeable results. Why I teach I teach because I love the practice and I want to share ..read more
