A Command is Still A Command
The Wittenberg Door

It has been argued that the command to gather for worship in Hebrews 10:25 is not really a command at all, but something of a suggestion that can be set aside for something more important, say, the civil authority’s desire to end in-person worship. So to proclaim as the Apostles, “we must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29) is not really appropriate since God does not here, nor anywhere else, actually command assembled worship. Or so goes the argument. But in Hebrews there is a verb form called hortatory subjunctive, a participle of means. It is used repeatedly as a command, often in a form ..read more

Trust the Shadow People!
The Wittenberg Door

Trust the Shadow People! The day after Labour Day in Canada, millions of children will return to school at publicly funded schools (including separate schools). There they are handed off to teachers who have created brightly lit classrooms that have interesting themes and back-to-school paraphernalia on the walls. The parents will meet, at the most, the teacher, an assistant, and perhaps a principal will greet them at the door. Parents will not meet the many administrators, counsellors, policy writers, curriculum experts, and others who create the policies that the elected board members rubber ..read more

From a Bible study sometime in 2005, on Tolerance
The Wittenberg Door

Holyoake’s 1896 publication English Secularism defines secularism thus: Secularism is a code of duty pertaining to this life, founded on considerations purely human, and intended mainly for those who find theology indefinite or inadequate, unreliable or unbelievable. Its essential principles are three: (1) The improvement of this life by material means. (2) That science is the available Providence of man. (3) That it is good to do good. Whether there be other good or not, the good of the present life is good, and it is good to seek that good. Define Tolerance as it is expressed today. 1. Toler ..read more

It’s an Abomination
The Wittenberg Door
by scottjacobsen

It might surprise you to learn that God doesn’t use the word abomination frequently, and certainly not lightly. Unclean foods, for example, are not called an abomination, but unclean. In the New Testament, all foods are clean and permissible (Mark 7:19, Luke 11:41; Acts 10:15; Acts 11:9). Abomination is arguably the strongest term possible for the kind of sin that is without exception, the most offensive to God (for a complete list, click here). This list is eye-opening, but I want to look at only on abomination: injustice. Look at (Proverbs 16:11; Proverbs 20:10, Proverbs 20:23; Levit ..read more

The NAR and Postmillennialism
The Wittenberg Door

I recently was asked, “What is the difference between the NAR (New Apostolic Reformation) movement and Postmillennialism. In preparing an in-depth answer, I stumbled upon this podcast. I don’t recommend a lot of podcasts, because I cannot endorse everything a podcaster says, but this one hits all the points and anything I would say would just be redundant. This podcast explains what the NAR is all about, its connection to 21st century charismaticsm, and explains what real Postmillennialism is about. This should be an eye-opener to anyone within the charismatic churches, because what is taught ..read more

About amnesty: “3 Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, 4 and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.” Luke 17:3–4 ESV.   We need to forgive. Christians are to forgive.   We need to forgive: When you shamed us for refusal to live by lies When you physically attacked for noncompliance When you forced our unemployment When you denied us the presence at family gatherings When you forced needless death and injuries from untested procedures When you caus ..read more

The Frankfurt Declaration of Christian and Civil Liberties

\ This is an excellent document. If you are a Christian, please consider reading and signing it. Full document here. INTRODUCTION Christians, Against The Abuse Of Power In the course of human events, it sometimes becomes necessary for people of good faith to speak out against the abuse of power. This should be done only after serious and prayerful deliberation, and even then, in an attitude of humility and with respect for the authorities that have been established by God. Such protest should be expressed in the hope that civil authorities who are found to be eroding rights and ..read more

The Approved Self
The Wittenberg Door
by scottjacobsen

Article reference here. We are past worrying about human rights: freedom of expression, conscience, religion, movement, association, etc. It is now clear that those taking control of things see all these rights as privileges. The question will remain: “Who wins in a society of privilege?” I would answer: “The approved self wins.” Not just any self, but the approved self (approved by the controllers) wins over all others. The rise of the narcissistic-subjective religion of self goes back to at least the 1960s, though the philosophy at its foundation extends to the Enlightenment (17th and ..read more
