Purr Cat Food Review

Country of origin Australia Available from Coles One of the most inappropriate ingredients in a food for your pet carnivorous cat is wheat and sorghum, and you’ll find that in the Purr dry cat foods. When I assess the ingredients of cat foods such as this it comes as no surprise so many cats suffer renal failure in their mid to senior years. Being fed cereal grains every day must take a real toll on their kidneys and digestive system which is biologically designed to digest animal products. Yes it’s cheap – good old Coles – but it’s not surprising as wheat and sorghum are cheap ingredi ..read more

Parasite Prevention: A Guide for Australian Dogs & Cats
Pet Food Reviews

My expertise is pet food, but my involvement in pet communities, the pet industry, and veterinarians has given me exposure to both the pros and cons of parasite treatments. Personally I only use parasite protection treatments when necessary. I live in Perth which is low risk, which means most of the time I see no need to use a treatment. Only when my dog shows signs of a flea, or when we venture out on a camping trip do I opt to use a treatment such as NexGard. In rural areas there is a much greater risk of parasites, which makes the use of parasite protection more necessary, and likely the mu ..read more

Applaws Dog Food Review

If you’re looking for a decent dog food which is both easy to get hold of and affordable, then Applaws might tick your boxes. It’s not the most premium dog food, but for the money I find it’s really decent. You’ll find Applaws at Coles and Woolworths, making it one of the best brands on the shelves, and it’s usually available for a great price from Pet Circle. Applaws is a British company, but they have a factory here in Australia which is where their dry food is made. Consumer feedback has been really good, especially from people who’s dog has intolerances to other foods (and grains), and fro ..read more

Dog food brands to avoid
Pet Food Reviews

How can you tell if a dog food brand should be avoided? In this article I’ll give you simple tips to avoid bad dog foods which won’t help your dog be healthy. You may wonder why these dog foods are sold, and the reason is there’s a target demographic – people like you, who don’t know much about canine nutrition and base your choices based on price and affordability. In Australia we have some really bad dog foods. They may seem cheap in the short term, but the long term result can be a sick dog and expensive vet bills. If you’re on a tight budget, which most of us are (which isn’t something to ..read more

How to fatten up your dog
Pet Food Reviews
by Pet Food Reviews (Australia)

Most people assume fattening up a dog means feeding them more dog food, which is usually why they fail. Fattening up your underweight dog isn’t as easy as feeding them more food. In fact, your current dog food could possibly be the reason your dog is underweight, and there are multiple reasons why. In most cases it’s more about feeding the right food, and you’ll be forgiven if pet food companies have misled you in this respect. Let’s start with a resounding quote. It’s from the controversial documentary The Magic Pill, sadly removed from Netflix due to… “conflicts of interest”… or something li ..read more

What’s the best cat food (in Australia)?
Pet Food Reviews
by Pet Food Reviews (Australia)

I started Pet Food Reviews a decade ago, and it’s been 15 years since I realised I’d been feeding my poor cat biscuits made mostly of grains – for my pet carnivore – as recommended by my vetinarian. Here we are in 2024, and the pet food industry is yet to answer my simple question – Why do we feed our carnivorous cats grains? Earlier this year I asked an ex-Hill’s Rep of around 35 years why we feed our pets grains. His first response was “Dogs are omnivores so it’s fine and scientific” (or words to that affect). I reiterated “Yes, but cats are obligate carnivores, so why is there so much grain ..read more

True Blue Dog Food Review

True Blue dog food may appeal to you if you want an Aussie brand made from Australian produce which won’t break the bank. You will find the True Blue range more readily available in rural areas, with four varieties on offer – Essentials, Family Dog, Working Dog, and Grain Free. Essentials is the cheapest, but I find the Grain Free is the best of the bunch for any dog – working dogs and family dogs included. I’ll go into reasons why later. It’s worth noting the Essentials range is not suitable for puppies, whereas the other three formulas are all life stages (puppy through to senior). True Blue ..read more

Prime100 Dog Food Rolls Review

Country of origin Australia Available from Petbarn, PETstock, Others Prime100 have a loyal following from social media groups such as Balanced Canine Sydney who have been a strong advocate for the brand, and numerous Australian veterinary clinics endorse Prime100 over big name brands Hill’s and Royal Canin. As a dog food roll I consider Prime100 to sit between dry food (kibble) and more true-to-form raw, dried raw, and BARF dog foods. The hypoallergenic SPD (Single Protein Diet) Prime100 Kangaroo & Pumpkin and Salmon & Tapioca rolls are very popular for those with dogs sufferin ..read more
