Did you know I’ve been writing this blog for over 16 years now? Yep, you got to see me start out as clueless personal finance blogger, have kids, move cities and change jobs more times than I would care to count. Then I left my engineer career in 2017 (over five years ago) and documented a lot of the shifts and changes to my life post FIRE. Like finding a job at the library I actually like and learning to let go of some of old habits of my old career. I’ve come to realize something really important about this blog recently: I don’t care about it anymore. You may have noticed the frequency of p ..read more

The Disney Report

Well I was surprised when I got a phone call from Passport Canada 15 weeks after I applied for my kids’ passports and they would be ready Friday (yep, the last possible business day before my trip starts…sigh). And to my further shock when I went to pick them up I didn’t even sit down to wait, my service number was called about a second after I got it. So in the end picking up the passports was a breeze. Then we were suddenly off to Disney World in less than 48 hours. So after months of planning, then moving things because the passports didn’t show up in time the first time, we finally were on ..read more

I’m working on updating my net worth and honestly it is a depressing number which is likely why I sort of let it slide for a week until I finally got the data for the post today. Yet despite that I’m still thankful for lots of things in my life. So rather than complain about things here is a list of things I’m thankful for: My wife and I have jobs so we not actually selling investments right now for living expenses. That when my washing machine recently broke we could afford to buy a new set of washer and dryer with having to take on debt. My family is mainly in good health (except for the co ..read more

Inflation Impacts
Canadian Dream: Free at 45

Well I finished reading another article about people struggling with affordability resulting from high inflation and while I can understand the impacts I’ve been oddly disconnected from it as well. I’m not saying I’m immune to inflation. Of course, our grocery bills have gone up like everyone else (our monthly bill now often exceeds $500 instead of $450) and I’ve seen cost increases in various things like gas for our car (I have to remember to pick the higher amount of $80 now when paying at the pump because $60 won’t fill that tank). Yet because we don’t have a mortgage or carry any debt we a ..read more

Five Years of FIRE

I’m sort of shocked that this has happened that somehow it has been almost five years already since I left behind my engineering career but life happens that way. You don’t pay attention to the small bits of time until they turn into the big blocks, but I suppose this a good time to review how things are going. On one hand I didn’t see my current life before I lived it. Yes I had plans when I left my old career behind but honestly some of those really never happened and other entirely new plans came into being instead. So that is perhaps my first lesson to everyone. Keep being flexible! Don’t ..read more

In some regards I suck at doing some things half ass. I can’t do just an okay job on some things in life. I’m okay to have a somewhat green lawn but when it comes to other things like my D&D game maps they resemble works of art. So when an opportunity came up at my workplace to get a promotion I decided to try for it despite the fact it was sort of an awful time to do it. I was already REALLY busy with several other things in life but when I did apply and put my heart into getting that job. So with my one day off one week I did my little pre-interview assessment but of course six pages of ..read more
